It was released from the liner in Melbourne on 17/05/2010. The 'liner' refers to the ship/ vessel the vehicle was transported on. I.e. a cruise liner is a cruise ship/ vessel.

But in his last line he is saying that the ship isn't due to dock until 21/05. I'd think that this means that your car has been booked / flagged for offloading in Melbourne and that this was flagged on 17/05.
I know when mine was on it's way, I had that status update occur about a week before my ship was due to dock.

My car arrived several days BEFORE the scheduled shipping date. Remember that shipping companies plans for poor ocean conditions so that they reduce the risk of being late into port, and so with favourable conditions come better turn around times.

This is actually incorrect. Liner release does not mean the car has been offloaded - that status is "Discharged". Note that the quantity for Liner Release is not "1".

I've seen several examples (including my own car) of Liner Release occuring approximately 8-10 days before the ship arrives in port. As per Christopher's comment above, I'd say it's the docks anticipating the arrival of the car and accounting for it.

Yep, I had similar - a Liner Release appeared on the 7th May, but the car didn't get a Discharged status until the 14th when the boat docked and it was unloaded.

Bit annoying considering it arrived into Brisbane on 30th April?
    I feel your pain buddy.
I was expecting pick up on Thursday this week (car arrived 5 May).

Turns out the car is still being held up at customs and hasn't even made it to VW yet.
They don't know when they will get it and now i am left with no expected pick up date.

Your's could have the same problem, being held up due to customs.
