Go drive one (not mine) and come back and say it's just a Golf
Just a golf? Im shocked! Whos this idiot? If I wanted just a golf I would have bought a 118TSI and be done with it. I know I wouldn't have to wait this long for one of those. But I just couldnt do it, never felt the base model really did anything for me looks wise either.
STI just an Impreza? EVO just a lancer? To to the people who say a car is just a car, maybe. Not to me.
Just hope you never have to run against another golf.. R.

gee I hafta admire the patience of all the folks here but I decided I'm into instant gratification so ordered my GTi on monday this week and am expecting delivery next friday.
GTi MKVI, Manual, 5 Door, Carbon steel, 18" detroit rims, leather, sunroof, mdi and aftermarket fiskon plus bluetooth for a shade over $48k onroad in the ACT.
This is pretty much the car I would have bought if I'd ordered from the factory except factory bluetooth (the fiskon looks quite ok but it's more expensive) and xenons instead of the sunroof. Close enough to keep me happy versus waiting for months.
I spent some time trying and considering the DSG but decided I'm buying the car for me not the granny or kid who buys it from me and I just plain like driving the manual more (if there's ever an "auto" that takes me to the dark side it'll be a DSG but not this time)
I also spent some time in an R but decided against it in the end partly on the instant-gratification front (best I could get was a white manual 5 door with 19" silver rims and acc being loaded on a boat at the moment that someone "forgot" to remove the customers name from) and partly because the R seems to really get up and differentiate itself from the GTi right at the point where the speed limit reaches out and sucks the fun out of it again and obviously cost ... an extra $12k up front plus the speeding tickets
lol.... sorry to let you guys down... I was actually at a Wedding yesterday and was not on the interwebs for an entire 24 hours! What is UP with THAT!?

Interesting to note your philosophy, chorrylan. Some (most) people on this forum seem to need to justify the outcomes of their expenditure by the model car that they end up with. Some of us can live with a lessor model without having to justify the $20K in the bank towards the house / wife/ gf etc. Having owned a Commodore Clubbie, I can say that it was still just a Commodore. But a very nicely appointed and quick one at that! With our speed limits in Oz, one cannot really appreciate the superior acceleration of the top models without incurring the wrath of the law. Lets just say that if you can afford the best in the lineup - go for it, but dont bag the ones that can't.

Yeah - even the 118 TSI is more than what most roads around here can handle. That said, sometimes I really want to overtake someone on a two-way road but hold back since I'm not quite sure if the car will pull it off as quickly as I'd like. A stage one tune would probably help there.
