Picked up my 3-door CW manual GTI this morning after a 4 week wait. That is the longest I've ever waited for a car. Drove it straight to the local ventureshield fitter and I will get it back tomorrow afternoon.

I ordered my 5 Door GTI DSG last Friday (6th Aug). Dealer had advance orders in the system, so was able to change one of them to my Spec. Had it confirmed today for Factory build in week 38 (13th Sept - a month's time), with hopefully delivery in Oz around 8 weeks later (mid to late November).

Interesting - are you buying in SA or interstate.. and if local which dealer may I ask?

I've had one on order for some time but apparently lost any spot I had in the queue when I changed the order (sadly this was never explained properly to me at the time.. I'd have kept it the same otherwise as it appears this may blow my wait out to 6-8 months).

I didn't change my spec and waited over 7 months in the end for mine... but there are so many circumstances that can delay an order: dealer delay in placing order, factory delay in allocating build spots for country or dealer, parts/spec issues causing build deferral, slow shipping, customs/quarantine holdups, delivery dramas, the list goes on.

After a long wait, you'll appreciate it even more when it finally arrives.

Actually if I knew it would be 7 months (from when I ordered) I would have accepted that. I was only ever after a fairly standard car (my musts were 5 door and DSG, my preferences were 18s, MDI and hopefully ACC) and was happy to take whatever I could get my hands on but even that hasn't helped the situation.

My current fear is that I may not even get a build week later this year (are there any more after the 37/38 that has been mentioned elsewhere on here?) and so that could blow this out to 9-10 months.

I'd never even thought about going insterstate for a car before (this would be my first VW) but have even tried that route this time - so far one Vic dealer offered me a car about $5,000 over-priced and a NSW dealer never bothered getting back to me after advising they would call back as soon as possible. I get the whole supply and demand thing but that kind of treatment sours the whole experience.

Thus my query to Fergus as his order is after mine and it is frustrating to know that if I could just find the right dealer I may be able to speed this process up and not miss out (sadly as I have new financial committments in 2011 I needed to settle on the GTI by January).

Hey Dutch77 - the week 37/38 timeframe is mostly notable because that's when everyone's Golf R's are to be built. From what I can see you're looking for a GTI, which are actually built quite regularly and all throughout the year for Australian customers (they're still "limited spots", but there is no "several month waits for contruction in batches").

As for other dealers who may be able to help you with "interstate orders" and maybe even from cars already in stock:
    (In no particular order)
Dermot Munro from Wangara VW in WA (08 ) 9309 7999
Phillip Fairhall from Gerald Slaven VW in ACT (02) 6222 2480
Mathew Gazzard from Denlo Parramatta VW in NSW (02) 8892 9889

I can personally vouch for all of them, and there are many forums members who have purchased from all three, including several forum members that I personally know have purchased from these guys and either driven their cars back to their home state (especially QLD, SA and VIC peoples for Mathew and Phillip), or had them shipped back to their home state (especially from Dermot, since no one is close to our poor WA friends!).

Thanks for that info - I wasn't aware that the GTIs tended to be built much more frequently than I thought (again lack of feedback from the dealer).

Unfortunately I am stuck with a trade-in which makes interstate deals a little more difficult so my preference was still to stay in SA (as I don't have the time or inclination to sell privately.. even if it is worth the extra $$). However given the lack of progress or info on my deal locally I may take the punt and investigate the above guys.

It's a pity the dealers aren't more willing to swap cars around - though I understand they all have businesses to run and a product that is in high demand so there is little incentive for them to do so. I'd gladly give up some discount to sort out delivery this year!

It's because the dealers are independent companies. Some companies may own multiple dealerships, but none are owned by Volkswagen (Germany) or Volkswagen Group Australia.
