    I'd rather have 18's, better grip, less weight.
    Why would you pay for an inferior option?

    Exactly!! If you prefer 19's you musn't be a driving enthusiast. The extra weight effecting all aspects of handling, rubbing etc.. they are too large for a Golf period. Sure 19's may look better to some ppl but that is the only 'pro' all other aspects are 'cons'.

    Yep... it's been discussed before, but the standard 18's on the R may ALREADY be enough of a performance compromise! On the GTI in track tests between the 17" Denvers and 18" Detroits, the Devners lap quicker! Lower weight plus more absorbsion of bumps etc...

    If having 17's meant having smaller brakes, then the detroits would be "faster".

    Yeah, but if it had 20s with bigger brakes but tyres filled with cement it would be slower.
