Honestly I have to partly disagree
When i first started researching the new Golf, i read about the Detroit option and at the time wondered how much difference 1" would make.
When I started going to dealerships, I made special care to judge for myself the up-close-and-personal difference between the stock and option wheels - and to cut a long story short, I was blown away
After seeing the difference in person the Detroit wheels immediately became my one and only non-negotiable - and I really haven't changed my mind since. And although I would normally (or previously) have chosen a much different style of rims, nothing else looks very appealing to me on a golf.
Obviously, this all comes down to personal preference, but personally I love the Detroits.
A few other random feelings:
* Rims should only ever be silver/chrome/smoked chrome. There's nothing worse than coloured wheels. (The one exception to this is Honda Integra Type-R in dark blue with white rims)
*corey is definitely correct to say that the real cost of Detroits is $1200. Volkswagen will not remove the price of the denvers in any other circumstance, and for the case of this argument, the cost of buying a Mk VI GTI is a given
*Why on earth are both the wheel options on a classic german car named after U.S cities?
*My loan paperwork should go through tomorrow, in plenty of time for my expected pick-up date of friday week (11 June 2010)
*Someone mentioned colours. Actually many people mentioned colours. Personally I love the MK VI in all the factory colours, although for some reason I'm not quite so taken by the black, and I wonder why they removed blue. That said... when it came right down to it, I think the only other colour I would have seriously considered was candy white.
*I agree that white or silver cars tend to look the least dirty for any given amount of dirt.
*Red cars tend to show up dirt the worst
*It's a weird personal idiosyncrasy, but I just think German cars should be silver

Just because the rims are mentioned here, I have the Detroits and the ride on those (without ACC) is clearly better than the ride on the MkV with 17". I was surprised as I was expecting it to be about the same.
