Entirely normal behaviour to shop around a fault. Been happening for years with illness and doctors, called a second opinion.
it's a fine line for mechanics and the amount of detail people want to hear about the car. Does the average joe want to know how and why the recirculation works??? Probably not. Are they talking jargon to confuse me and not fix the problem???
Though as many of us on here have some level of mechanical knowledge, or at least appreciation, an explanation is quite reasonable to expect.
Here is a VCDS log to show what goes on. TSI118 cold start.xls Pretty much confirms that rough idle ceases once EGT and CAT temps peak at 665c. Start plus 40 seconds. At this point IEGR ceases and lambda emission control activates.

Thanks to all for your enlightening responses. While some of them were a bit technical for me, they were certainly more convincing than a cursory "We updated the software and it's within specifications". I enjoy driving a modern car but I'm sure there's more to it than just software. Anyway, communication and body language can be important too, especially to an ignorant potential long-term customer.
