New Polo GTI Versus Golf GTI

My beef with the Mk6 isn't that isn't well made - I will give it that. But the refinement that those improvements have made has diluted the experience somewhat. And the looks of the rear takes some getting used to. Still not loving it.

I guess you would have to drive both.

Some pro's and con's to both but they aren't that different anyway, not worth all the fuss. Nice if you got a new MK5 but time moves on and now people have the choice of a new MK6 or second hand MK5. Some good deals out there for both.

Major differences between the Golf and Polo apart form the size will be in the Ride Quality and NVH Levels as they are built to a difference price point... The golf will be superior... My Polo GTI has quite rubbish ride quality to be fair compared to my mates mk5 GT and the misses Astra

The ride quality of the GT (Grand Tourer) is setup for a compliant ride (comfort) which is great for long distance driving while the Polo GTI would be firmer for a sportier handling. They have been designed to fit their design parameters. The GT isn't great on the twisty stuff where the Polo GTI would probably perform better with it's stiffer suspension. I really like the current Polo GTI. Looking forward to trying the new one (May trade in the GT for it).

This is true, but the current Polo GTI is very crashy over bumps, while the Mk5 GTI is not nearly anywhere as bad... Considering how firm the ride is sometimes, it feels like it 'topples' quite a lot in corners in stock form. A sway bar fixes a lot of this though

Well, the new Polo has been announced as 2010 World Car Of The Year. So I would say that the new Polo is not just a lot better looking than the old one, but probably a whole lot more refined than the old one too!

VW also picked up World Green Car Of The Year for the entire BlueMotion range.
The Audi R8 V10 got the World Performance Car Of The Year.

I wouldn't want to pay over $30k for a new polo, and by the time you add any options could easily be more than that. If DSG is standard I assume that's built into the price? Nice if it was out before the end of the year.

I hate to inform you, but the current Polo GTI was $26,990. By the time you add your dealer delivery and onroads, that was $30,650. You also had leather and sunroof. I think they added $2k each (plus stamp duty).
Obviously you had bargaining power, but yeah. I don't think it's reasonable to expect this new one to be less than $30k considering the old one wasn't

And you're right, the new one would be at least $29,490 due to the DSG.
You could then probably add $2.5k for leather, $2k for sunroof and $2k for Xenons.
There will also probably be Nav options (though RNS-310 which we hadn't had before in this country) and PDC options (or maybe they'll be included).

The point is it's meant to be a cheap car with good performance, and i personally wouldn't add all those options as it would be creaping toward $40k and you can get GTI's for around 40k.

I don't think you can judge the new Polo until you drive one. When I first bought my Polo, I thought it was great. It didn't take long to work out the suspension was pretty average when the car was chipped. With some work, the Polo is fast enough for me, but did need some work.

With some $$$, the Polo has massive potential and IMO good looks. It does not have a flash interior, but I don't need a gimicky interior. I'm in it to drive, not play with touchscreens or sleep.

I think the new Polo will sell quite a few units. With most cars getting bigger, the Polo is going to be very practical. I'm not convinced about the motor, but the fuel economy is what most people will see...

Yeah - I get your point, and you make it in each thread that this comes up in. BUUUT what also need to be said each time is that if you're looking at these options, as they're not standard on the Golf GTI anyway, you're only spending more money by switching to a Golf GTI and then including these options.

So someone that wants a car with Xenons, Sunroof, Navigation and Leather, or any combination of those, should just get the car they want to get, because changing to a more expensive car is just that - changing to a more expensive car.

It'd be a different situation if changing to a more expensive car already included those options like in some makes of car.

I think the case for the New Polo GTI over the Golf MK6 GTI is directly related to that seemingly incurable disease affecting the automotive industry since the early 80's , Metal Creep , commonly known as Automotive Obesity, causing every new model of a current model to bloat up by around 5% year on year.
If you looked at the size of cars we called large back in the late 70's they now equate to a midsized sedan. Yes I know there's the safety thing going on, but it all can't be down to that. The fact that the New Polo is in all respects the same dimensionaly as the MK3 Golf testifies to this. I'll go the light on the road , light on the pocket route every time .
