In my experience i liked driving the DSG for about 30 mins. after that it became boring just like a conventional auto. And with the issues i have heard/read i'd never buy one. it seems like VW is dropping the ball alltogether (118TSI breaking pistons, Water pupm noise on the same engine, Golf R tuned down for AUS etc)

*ouch* is the word..!!
This debate is worse than religion or politics - no one's gonna move from their position and those on the other side are either luddites or heretics depending on where you sit...
I've been driving for just over 20 years and my coming Golf will be the first "auto" (yes I know it's really a robotised manual) I've owned... So yes, I can drive a manual but the DSG does seem to be best of both worlds in my case..

- Anthony.

Yep, DSG is the best of both worlds for me too. It kicks arse over the BMW (E46) SMG, and it is great for all the city crawling I do the most of the time.
I have always had manuals and love them, but DSG is always quicker than me and smoother. I do miss the feel of the hand//foot thing in a manual, but I don't get to do a mountain climb everyday so the DSG is a winner for me Plus, like it or not, auto's will always have better resale, becuase there are so many useless donks who cannot (opposed to choosing not to) drive a manual.

Dear Nic, (and I really did think you were a reasonable person)
I take great offence at this post. I have great experience in driving both manual and automatic transmissions, and now drive a VW with DSG, my second such car. DSG is (as I've stated many times on this forum) an automatic tranmsmision, however it differs in both operating principle and feel to any other automatic transmission. At the end of the day, each individual makes their own choice as to which they prefer.
I have driven countless different types of transmission, probably more varieties than you will ever experience in your time as a driver and for you to state that DSG drivers don't know how to drive a manual is insulting and erroneous.
Have you ever driven a :-
Multi range transmission such as a 9,10,15,18 speed roadranger with no synchromesh on anything other than the range change?
Or to go one better:-
An 18 speed twin stick (Mack) gearbox with no synchros, totally dependent on shifting two gearsticks in sequence to keep the whole show on the road?
Don't bother answering as the questions are completely rhetorical, the answer is known (and I've driven all of the aforementioned transmissions).
I drive a DSG because I choose to, not because I'm incapable. My experience definitely outweighs yours and I'm more than capable of driving any manual transmission. Please think before posting such uninformed and insulting responses in future.
Cheers
George
