ROFLOL! This is what I have been saying since I tested the MKVI GTI Nov last year. Looks like I am not the only one to notice!

Yeah - it surprised me too.
The only "hope" is that there was something wrong with the GTI and R's brakes (maybe these cars had already been used before... maybe since they were part of the top 3 the guys had driven them so much that the pads were seriously worn out).

Whilst that's only a "hope", the fact that the Golf GTD actually came in 5th on the brake test, only 20cm behind the WRX and 2 metres ahead of the GTI and R, does seem to indicate something strange was going on...

I think everyone has noticed dude. It's just that the MKVI has improved so much in so many ways that it still took the #1 spot

Can this be fixed with an APR tune or VAGCOM code?

I know its a common complaint but i'd happily pay to be able to fully turn it off when I press the button. Skidpan/motorkhana days won't be the same with it on

So I've just deleted several posts from where the replies started using *'s and $'s to vaguely disguise words.... if you don't like the fact your post was deleted, just PM me and I"ll glady undelete it and give you an infraction instead

Lets leave the never ending MKV vs MK6 (*cough* MKV.5 *cough*) stuff for one of the 500 other threads dragged into the crapper by that discussion

    Back on topic...

I remember reading someone that an aftermarket tuner company could possibly do this via an ECU update. I'm not sure whether once receiving the cars they all realised that it cannot be done, or whether they are all concerned about their legal positioning if someone actually disabled this using their product and then died on the roads...

Aren't the cars ( Audi, BMW 330d, 300C and Hsv) mentioned only available as autos (except the HSV)?

The addition of DSG to the GTI could have actually deprived it of BFYB simply because of the extra $2500 added to the price.

If I am not mistaken the GTI was also not fitted with the optional 18 inch wheels or ACC (not sure about the R).

The Clio was the basic Cup not the more expensive Trophee, the HSV was the cheapest model etc etc.

just got the mag then.... will check out all the specs tonight after work

it looks like they have attempted to compare apples with applies which is good.... if they added the dsg to the gti/r they would have to add auto type transmission on every other car (adding similar costs), thus bringing them all again on a level playing field....

They had a couple of ring ins. The suzuki alto (which would have won......) and the Nissan GTR (which would have come 9th...) The "Bucks" definitely outweighed the "Bang". Another example of this is that the Clio would have won, if it was cheaper, and DSG might have cost the GTI victory, as it would make it more expensive.

On brakes, the Clio (I know...) has 4 piston Brembos and weighs 160 kg less than the GTI. That doesn't explain why the GTD outbraked the GTI and the R . Clio was wearing ContiSportContact 3s, the Golfs all on Bridgestone RE050s.

Also, they are using 1 example of each car. Mention was made that they had had faster versions of some cars in the past.

Still, it it what it is, and that's another way of comparing cars.

Just a clarification. The two "ring ins" were the Nissan GTR (as current "Performance Car Of The Year" from last years 2009 round-up), and the Suzuki Alto as Australia's cheapest car right now (though, I thought that was a Proton). Although the Suzuki was the slowest in every single test, using the BFYB formula it would have won only IF the Nissan GTR was also included. This is because the GTR's price tag would have driven the average price up so high that the differential back to the Alto would have given it such a high score on the "buck" scale that it made up for it's incredibly dismal "bang" score.....

... which is exactly why there is a $100k cap on BFYB entries.

MOTOR are an enthusiast's magazine, hence the use of the manual transmissions. Everybody knows real men prefer three pedals...

Shame they didn't test the DSG versions considering most other cars were all autos, and the DSG is somewhat faster although would push the cost up.
