It's the date the compliance plate was affixed to the car once in Australia.

There have been examples where unpopular cars have had a build and compliance date that have differed by 2 yrs!

The whole Model Year thing seems to have originated from the USA. Model Years would switch over around Sept/Oct.

So, for example you could get a car built in Oct 1983 that was considered a "1984" Model.
You could also get a brand new model/car released in early 1983 that was released as the "new 1984 model"

We, in Australia, had it much simpler. A new or substantially modified model just had a different designation. VB, VC, VH etc Commodore. XA, XB, XC... Falcon.

On a Polo and presumably the Golf the plate is on the B pillar inside the passenger front door Go and have a look at it and tell us what it says

It will have a build date and a compliance date. Month/year for both

The first is when it was built, Obviously.

The second is after it arrived in the country and was authorised to be able to be used (COMPLIANCED)

As already said an unpopular car may not get complianced for months or even a year.

That is why when they are registered the BUILD date is used to define the year that describes the car.

Look on your rego papers Its on there.

Back to what someone said about insurance going by the build date rather than compliance date, there was no option for a 2010 model Golf GTI DSG Adidas. The only option available was 2011. This is despite all Adidas editions being built in 2010 but complied in Australia in 2011.

I also checked Redbook, there is no sign of an Adidas under the 2010 Golf category, only 2011.

Same goes for registration, the build date is 2010 but the compliance date is 2011, it is registered as 2011. According to my insurance company, my leasing company, Qld Transport, Redbook and Carsales.com there is no such thing as a 2010 GTI Adidas despite them all having a 2010 build date. This leads me to believe, unless this is a unique situation, that the compliance date is what most things are based on.

Wonder when they registerd this one then

I cant answer other than to say I spent several hours about mine when I was charged a higher rate than a 2011.

I argued that it was an MY11 and identical to a car built and complianced in early 2011.

After a lot of tooing and froing they advised me that the 2010 had been allocated the incorrect insurance category and reduced my premium to the same as a 2011..

I have asked both my insurance companies to define how they set the year for the car and will post the answers if and when I get them.

In Qld, its the build date that defines the year of the car for rego purposes. Mine is MY12, build date Oct 11, Aust compliance Jan 12. The rego label and certificate list it as a 2011 car.

I don't think we can say categorically that it's the build date or the compliance plate. It doesn't seem to be consistent. I think we can safely say the "MYxx" has no significance for rego purposes.

Just to make sure I haven't gone completely mad I went and checked again. My car is definitely November 2010 build date. It is an MY11. It was complied in Australia in Feb 2011, and first registered when I bought it in July 2011. The rego sticker says 2011 Volkswagen, and my insurance company is the same. Every other reference to Adidas edition vehicles in Australia shows them being 2011 MY11 vehicles, despite them all being mid-late 2010 builds.

Seems like the jury is still out. It's an interesting discussion though. Maybe I'll have a search and see if I can find a link to Qld Transport to find out for sure.

Here is the reply from one of the insurance companies

"At ******* we rely on the data of motor vehicles delivered by the Glasses guide. The Glasses Guide categorises a motor vehicle based on the year the vehicle was actually built, not the model year or the compliance year."

So will wait for the other one to reply as when I try to find models on Glass's site its a bit difficult to find much for free

You are correct, a forum member has an Adidas like yours and it too is build 2010, registered 2011 and the label says "2011".
