Compliance date has little, if anything, to do with car valuations or insurance.

I just went to the AAMI site for insurance. The question is "When was your car manufactured". That's not compliance date (which could be months or years after build date)

I went to the NRMA site and it says "Year the car was made"

Model Year will have an affect if two cars made in the same year have different Model Year designations signifying an upgrade.
Then again it could work the other way if the MY change introductions equipment deletions or downgrades.

This was the point I made with mine as I pointed out the MY10 finished in August??? and the MY11 started in Sept with mine being a fairly early one by the chassis number.

After a bit of research they altered their stance about it as I said earlier in the thread

Most valuations that I've seen are based on model year rather than build date. My understanding is that car manufacturers start building the next model year around June so they hit dealerships by September. People are happy to buy a 2012 model in October 2012 but expect discounts on last years car come Jan 2013.

So using your theory why should they get discounts. They are all the same model year.

However the build date signifies that it was built in the previous year and so that is what it must be advertised as.

If a dealer or you tried to sell me a car as a 2013 and it had a build date of 2012 I would be rather unhappy.

Even Centrelink class mine as a 2010 even though it is an MY11

The Rego form states " Year of Manufacture" and my insurer asked for "build date" for insurance

I saw it on the showroom floor around that date so it almost certainly wasn't on that boat. All I know is the build date is the date when the engine and the chassis are bolted together and that was mid June in my case. I have no idea how long the rest of the build or how long it would kick about in Germany before catching the boat over here.

Yes. My car was on that boat. That boat landed in Melbourne 27th Dec, and then 29th Dec in Port Kembla (I'm in Sydney)

As of yesterday, the dealer told me that Patricks has not released the car yet. So that is, to my mind, a long time for Patricks to submit paper work and rivit a compliance plate to the chassis!

I picked up what is supposed to be a MY13 gti today only to find the rego sticker reads "2012 VW". When I was looking to buy the vehicle last week, I was assured 3 times by the salesman that it was indeed a MY13. He even produced some paperwork and pointed to the last 2 numbers which seemed to indicate it was a 13 model. I called up a vw mechanic that I know and he said to check the sixth character on the chassis number - a D would indicate my13. It checked out and it has a build date of June 2012 but the D was there (I heard somewhere that vw start building a model year from week 22 so it would be a very early build).

The "model year" and the "build date" do not always coincide.

Volkswagen defines their "model year" in the following way:

MY11 (B) covers mid-year 2010 to mid-year 2011
MY12 (C) covers mid-year 2011 to mid-year 2012
MY13 (D) covers mid-year 2012 to mid-year 2013 (or until whenever production makes way for the Mk7 Golf)

etc.

So does anyone know how to definitively check the model year? I'm hoping it could just be an admin error...

As already mentioned, the 10th digit of the VIN represents the vehicle's "model year".

If it's a "D", then it's definitely MY13.

Yeah, I know the model year and build date aren't the same thing, just explaining how Volkswagen can designate a vehicle built in 2012 as a "MY13" vehicle.

I leave the rest of the world to interpret that as they wish.

Diesel_vert explained it perfectly and most other car makers do the same Its by no means exclusive to VW

At least when all the cars are listed it's easier for me to tell, since the MY before my car was the Mk5 Golf

You're quite right. I didn't proof read my message properly. What I was trying to say is you'd expect a discount on a MY12 car if you walked into a dealership today. That same car in Oct 2012 wouldn't seem like such a bad proposition so it makes it easier for dealerships to sell without heavy discounting.

I think I understand now. The dealer had stated that it will be a MY13 with a 2013 registration. I thought that the registration date would dictate the year printed on the rego sticker and obviously that logic was incorrect. So what exactly is a compliance date? Is it the date it arrives in the country?
