To be honest it sounds like a massive waste of money.
Why would you upgrade to a 1" bigger version of the wheels you already have and they're only rep's?
Plus the cost of a set of new tyres as well.

There's often 19" original Talladegas coming up for sale so I'd just keep an eye on the parts for sale listing. Why buy knock-offs when you can buy the real thing (second hand) for not much more.

reps add weight. As for anything else, the tyre should become smaller to keep the rolling distance the same. Personally I'd want better stance (lower offset).

You can easily make the ride more harsh, added weight and cheap tyres don't help.

IMO do it right, get some nice looking rims, nice tyres, consider the offset, tyre width, impact on handling and fuel economy. Tyres are your only link between power / braking and the road, going cheap will be a step backwards on a car that is performance oriented.

if the wheel and tyre width are the same, offset is the same, and rolling diameter of the new tyre is the same as existing there will be no change in clearance

I think they're might be something in that comment. My Golf R was supplied on factory 19's and it has an awful turning circle.Another mate with the same car and spec's thinks the same.

Maybe the extra width and diameter made VW reduce the lock?

Thanks for the replies, reason for the change is he wants black wheels, and wanted them OEM but as it was a run out model there were none available in the colour he wanted and the dealer was reluctant to swap which brings me on to the steering lock, my r has factory black 19" wheels and is like a ship to turnaround...we were thinking maybe that's why the dealer wouldn't just swap the wheels over, there must be a factory mod. Just putting the feelers out there as to quality of the knock off rims. If you wrap knock off wheels in good tyres, except for weight which I'm sure isn't massively different, surely there's not much difference from OEM...or am I missing something?

    Upgrading 18" for 19"

Yep, the steering racks are different for the 19". If you put the 19" on there will be some rubbing. Dealers are aware of the problems and would not be prepared for change due to possible warranty issues.

Why doesn't he just get the wheels painted.

There is a significant weight difference between rep's and real.
I had 19" reps which were 12.5kg per corner, then i upgraded to my enkei's and they are 8kg.
So 4.5kg per corner and it's unsprung weight which makes a huge difference.

What are the duck's nuts at the moment with regards to tyres? I'm due for a new set. Ive got Conti CSC3's at the moment, they're alright but just thinking of trying something new like some Michelin or Pirellis. Mainly after a good all rounder - something good for general everyday use with reasonable wear, but also at home on the twisties & occasional leisurely squirt around the track. Cheers
