Is anyone finding the Golf R factory 18" Dunlop SP Sport Maxx GT tyres a bit noisy? I am finding on smooth roads with constant speed, a "rally car tyre" kind of sound coming from the back (most noticeable from 70km/hr to 110km/hr). I am hoping it isn't the rear diff (car is near new! 1500km).

Dunlops have always been notoriously noisy in my experience.

i have potenza re050a and they are noisy on rough surfaces.

people should realise that if they want quiet tyres, they should avoid all max summer performance tyres (tirerack classification), all stock gti and r are these max summer except lately the gti 17" comes with turanza er300. if you want quiet, go with touring type of tyres instead (more mileage, quieter, but usually LESS dry grip).

I have replaced Bridestone RE050s with F1 Asym.2 (225/40/R18 $1,380.00 locally) ... after few hundred kms (sunny weather) F1 Asym.S2 is gripper, not so hard on your back ... noise - it is funny - it is different noise - sometimes on the WA's not so smooth roads it is sounding like you have flat tyre.

I find the Michelin Pilot Super Sports quieter than the standard Turanzas and the grip is massive. Not sure about longevity yet though.

My R with 18s came standard with Conti 2's, not Dunlop SP's. Surprisngly they are better than the Conti 2's I had on my GTI - quieter and grip better in the wet. Maybe a different version or change of compound ?

I have only done 1500km! But I wonder if the alignment is garbage, and that is where the noise is coming from. It seems to be a whir type noise, and seems to be coming from the back only, hence my slight worry about the diff noise.

New tyres - MK6 GTI with 18" wheels

I have Continental SportContact 2 225/40 R18's on my GTI. The fronts are worn out now after 27,000km and time for some new ones (just fronts).

What have you guys been buying to replace your stock tyres? I understand the Conti's are pretty good in terms of performance but longevity is a little disappointing, and they seem to get pretty ripped up due to the soft compound. If there is a tyre around that performs equal to or better than the Conti, but has better longevity and equal or lower cost, then I would consider those tyres, but cost and longevity are not my top priorities.

I guess I may be able to get away with rotating the fronts and rears and getting another, say, 10,000km out of them. Then replace all 4. I may even decide to go with a wheel & tyre package if that's the route I take.

    I await your learned comments!

The Conti SC2/3 have soft sidewall. comfy ride but they dont withstand track abuse well, especially on QR!

Goodyear Assymetric 2 seems to be the best street tyre at the moment, it tops 1st place in many of the tyres test according tyrereviews.co.uk
