    I've used the spacesaver that was in my Mk3.5 Cabrio. Had to put it on at the Shell in liverpool & drive along the m5 to Hurstville.

    The front left was flat, so I had to jack up the rear left first & fit the spacesaver, then put the left rear onto the left front. The difference in the dynamics of the car are quite noticeable - to the point where if i see a FWD car with the spacesaver fitted to the front, I really wonder what the drugs the driver is on.

    my 2c: If you can get a full size spare, go for it.

    1stVeedub - try ebay. You might have to buy 4 rims & they won't be the same pattern but it shouldn't cost more than $200 in that size.

    23,000 kms in the golf R and my front tyres are now shagged
    Replacement Dunlop GT Sportmaxx in 235/35 ZR19 will cost me $700 each but i might be able to get Conti CSC 3's for a good deal so will probably switch over to Conti's (it's pretty close to the Tirerack pricing). The new Conti 5P's are a bit more $$ and i also don't think the tread looks as good on them.

    Only question is whether i put the new ones on the front, or the rear?? Have had bad experiences in the past with changing tyres front to rear in FWD cars and having a huge increase in road noise.

    $700ea? christ, ur better off getting from tirerack or performance alloys, it will be about $1200-1500 delivered

    250 million European drivers rely on spacesavers, but one Brad from Hurstville doesn't like them.

    I'd definitely waste up to $1,000 for nothing on a full size spare.

    BTW; Of course it changes the dynamics of the car - it is for the once in 5 years trip hme when you get a flat - you dirve carefully when you use it Brad.

    Sorry for passing on my experience on the subject. I didn't realise you were a subject matter expert.

    Once in 5 years? I have 4 flats in the past 5 years.

    If you like run flats then good for you. Lots of people don't and prefer an alternative. Same as lots of people don't like runflats or repair kit in a can.

    Not sure why you put a $1k price on a spare tyre - as i said, in the posters size (16x6.5 with 205/65x16) you'll get 4 rims & tyres off ebay for <$200. Keep one & sell the other 3 to like minded individuals.

    You should put the new ones on the rear but if you've gone 23,000km without doing a tyre rotation then the rears will probably be slightly saw-tooth on the inside edge & be noisy when put on the front. So you haven't got much choice but to put them on the front.

    I just bought some conti extreme contact dws's and the price came to less than 50% of what I would pay here. Trick is to keep the cost of the tyres alone below $1,000 then no duty, gst etc.
    If the cost of the Tyres goes over $1,000 then duty and gst is payable on the full amount including shipping.
    Yeah I got a quote for 225/45/17 Asym 2's, but I was blown away by the postage cost which ended up being almost the same price as the tyre itself (over $130 per tyre). It still would work out cheaper than if I bought them here (when (or if) they do release them here), but probably only save me about $80 altogether.
    Called up a tyre place this morning and got a great deal on Michelin PS3's. No fuss, Done.

    Yeah i figured it was too late to rotate them.
    I'm hoping a mate with contacts will help me out locally with a good price on the CSC 3's, but if not it will be tirerack for sure.

    Well, provided that...

    - the tyre fitter doesn't notice (else you can pay cash, no receipt)
    - the road-worthiness inspector doesn't notice (distract him/her?)
    - the assessor from the insurance company doesn't notice (distract him/her?)
    - the police don't notice during one of their routine inspections (pray...)
    - you accept that the tyres will have a reduced service life
    - you accept that the tyres will have a reduced capacity to bear loads (in terms of static & dynamic lateral & longitudinal forces)

    ... then yeah, I don't see why not.
