I also have S001 fitted. I went with 235/40/18 and they were $300 each. First day of new tires, i followed my friends' RX7, S15 and 350z, drove 400kms to some outback areas, constantly did 120kmh to 180kmh. The drive was smooth, car felt stable and road noise wasnt bad at all (even at 180kmh) . Those tires are awesome imo.

Depending on how close the other tyre is to the treadwear limit, it might be worth enquiring about a pair of Potenza S001, which is the direct successor to the Potenza RE050 / RE050A. Introduced in December 2009 in Japan, its only been recently released in Australia, so I've seen some good introductory prices in other sizes - hopefully that might apply to 225/40 R18 as well.

This way, you'll at least have four Bridgestones on the vehicle, whilst the tyres themselves won't be too dissimilar as they are from the same lineage.

In any case, why spend AUD 474.00 per tyre on the superseded RE050 / RE050A when you can get the newer and better S001 for a similar price...

Only 1600km ... I was thinking about that but I needed it urgently and already arranged installation - Monday ... (only 2 Bridgestone tires in that size in stock) and remember I am in WA so...so far from everything and anything.

I had an irrepairable puncture with my tyre over the weekend as well! Nobody had the RE050 in stock as it is being phased out and replaced with the S001. Running two tyres with different tread pattern on the same axle isn't recommended and so I changed both my tyres to Michelin PS3s. They costed me $280 each for 225/45R17. Also got quoted $279 for the S001.

So far I find the PS3 a superior tyre to the RE050. Better grip and less road noise.

Unlucky/expensive weekend for us,

.... my options are limited - 18”wheels.... and here in Perth S001 in 18" is $484.00 so I am going with RE050A

Just to update this thread.

After looking at various options, I have decided to go with the Goodyear Eagle F1 Asym 2s for my Jetta TFSI. My wife is now driving the Jetta more and I decided a heavily biased tyre (like a NT05) would not be a good idea. The Asym 2 seem to get an okay writeup, and I can buy then under GYs current buy 3 get 1 free promo to reduce the cost.

The RE050As that are on there are absolutely terrible at present. After 17000kms they have lost most of their traction and grip. I even chirped into second gear today with ESP on and not even pushing the Jetta hard. They have gone downhill quite badly in the last 2000kms or so.
