You'd need to be dropping to at least a 215 to get stretch.. but check out here to get a feel for what you want to do:

Hey guys, I hope this is in the right place. I'm weighing up a few different wheels for my MK6 GTI (reflex silver). What are your thoughts, experiences and opinions on the following wheels? I've already got 18" Detroits, so I'm think I will step up to 19's.
If you actually have any of these wheels fitted, I would love to see some pictures!
Appreciate your input. Cheers

*I've included both VMR & Avant Garde because I've been told there is a significant quality difference between them, which is why I'm asking for some feedback and experiences with them both.
If you want opinions on the quality of the wheels, and their alternatives, I suggest you ask in the following thread:
The Official Mk7 Wheel Thread
Obviously you don't have a Mk7, but the above thread is highly active and maintained by the expert wheelman Dutch77, who knows all things wheels.

Hey guys I have a Mk 6 golf r and was wondering what size tyre I can fit 19 8.5 with a ET of 32 any help would be great thanks
I'm not sure the tyres is the issue you need to be concerned about... I don't think that those spec wheels will (legally or sensibly) fit a Golf R. They'd fit the Scirocco R, but not the Golf. I've seen people _just_ fit 8.5 ET 45 after rolling guards and giving up turning circle and still having a bit of rub etc. Typically you'd stick to 8" wide.
Okay, so I have a mk6 R that was factory delivered with 18 inch wheels. Can I just swap them over for 19insh mk6 R Talladegas? Is the steering lock different on cars delivered with 18's vs 19's meaning if I put 19's on I'll rub at full lock?
My other option is a set of 18 x 8 with 48 offset fitted with 235/40/R18. Using the online calculators this combo isn't much wider than stock 18's but the diameter is slightly bigger, but still not as much as 19's with 235/35/R19.
Car has stock suspension i.e.. not lowered at all.
thanks in advance...
Pre sure they are the same
