    Mk6 money pit…

2012 Mk6 GTi DSG. 147km. Whining in 1st and 2nd. Took it to lube mobile, who removed the box and took it to transmissions r us in Perth, and apparently needs bearings replaced and a new clutch. Quoted $6000 all up.

I’ll keep it simple, am I being ripped off? Can I put in a used DQ500 with clutch for less than $6000 or is that not possible?

I don’t have time to do the research myself. Hoping some legends on here can help me out.

    Thanks in advance.

I am sure a 2nd-hand, low km DQ250 installed would cost a lot less than that; how long has it been making the noise? When the bearings go they tend to spread metal shavings around see Golf R 4MOTION DSG DQ250 Tapered roller bearing replacement - YouTube

As above - i wouldnt bother rebuilding the existing gearbox. There are heaps of DQ250 gearbox's around from crashed cars....id be grabbing one of those and throwing it in.

DQ500 is a bit of a rabbit hole money pit type situation. Would only persue that if you can find someone who has done several conversions already and knows all the tricks and traps.

Fitting a DQ500 wouldn't save you anything. All kinds of dramas to make that work.
