I put LED indicators front and rear in my R and see this initialization also when starting, it is just the car sending a short pulse to check for bulb out, no harm.
This is the kind of thing I mean..

True, could be an issue with some CECMs. Constant flicker is just the frame rate issue with the video (will look solid in real life). it's the flashing and slow 'loading' that would worry me!

Because they don't do a bulb check with LED lamps. The pulse sent will briefly go through an incandescent filament without being seen, but a LED takes just mA current to both operate, and lights up nearly instantly compared to incandescent/halogen filament type globes. I assume bulb out type tests aren't done with LEDS since they should in theory last a lifetime...(certainly if manufactured properly won't be prone to blowing from vibrations etc like filament globes).

If anyone is game for for OEM looking replicas but won't break the bank, apparently you can get these for AU$350 express shipped from China.
For VOLKSWAGEN VW GOLF 6 LED TAIL LAMP, Rear Bumper Rear Lights MK6 (Fits MK6)-in Rear Lights from Automobiles & Motorcycles on Aliexpress.com
I've only used Aliexpress.com for clothing and has never failed me yet. Didn't realise I could get car parts too. There's a few other shops that sell visually similar LED tails too. Worth checking out I think.

You shouldn't need a change to your CECM if you're running a 2012 Golf. Check out this link:

Good info thanks.
But why on jku's website does it say:
"BCM CECM module has to be highline (part # ending in 087)"
genuine VW Golf R OEM LED Taillights retrofit kit RHD 5K0945093AG Euro Car Upgrades
and on the CECM part:
Central Electric Module 1K0937087R - version High R20 / GTI
Body Control Module - Central Electrics Control Module
Compatible with :
- LED DRL
- LED Tail Lights
- LED License Plate
- Bi-Xenon Headlights
genuine VW BCM CECM Highline - LED Xenon R20 - 1K0937087R Euro Car Upgrades
Just a little confused now.

If you can wait a couple of weeks we can do a full scan of your car and then you'll know exactly what control modules etc you have.
Otherwise you could take a punt that your control module will work and only upgrade it if you can't get yours to work.
Welcome to the world of VW electronics. This is the bit where everyone takes a guess at what features the VW engineers have put into what version of each module and people find out by trial and error as to what parts are needed when they go to do upgrades on their cars.
If you can find someone that has done the upgrade on a similar spec/age car you should be fairly right.
Not sure what happens with the "older" CECM whether you just get bulb out warnings on the dash or if the lights don't work at all. If you just get warnings I'd take the risk and then if you get errors coming up you can change the CECM later on to get rid of the faults. Either way you'll need to change some of the coding.

JKU highlights the required module because not all Golfs (overseas particularly; low-spec models) are fitted with this part. However I'm 99.9% sure you'll have a highline CECM and compatible revision already. We've done this on dozens of cars that I know of (including TDIs), and I have personally coded several Golfs and GTIs. Wait till you can get a VCDS scan of your car so we can verify the part and revision numbers.
Bulb-out warning only.
