Characteristic my arse. It's quite simply really. Did the engineers design the engine to have the rattle? No. Is the rattle consistent across all cars? No. Then it is a quality defect. Quality is determined by the customer and not vw.
I see. I will ask them if I can get one then. Yeah that's what the mechanic told me and he said it's just very annoying and that I don't need to register the problem/finding with VW as they will be sending out letters if there is an official fix. I just wanted to have it ready for later when the time comes to sell the car as it would be easier to just show the buyer that it's a characteristic than asking them to look up this site or seek advice from VW dealers.

Setup a class action suit against VW?
Btw I noticed the rattle is getting louder these days. I will take it in to see if anything else is loose around exhaust area when eventually unbearable. The mechanic did say something like wastegate actuator rod noise can be heard in exhaust area as well and worse on going up a hill. I've told him I also had it when cruising on highway at those revs and he knew about it too.

This rattle is P!@#ing me off! People can say 'shut the window', 'put the music up'...that's BS. It should not be there in the first place. I have to take mine into the dealer on Saturday for 1500km check. I will be making sure I get a reasonable explanation as to why my brand new car has a rattle. It's not something we should have to put up with. We have not purchased $14990 drive away cars here to just have to put up with it.
'It's a characteristic' - WTF... 'So you would like to buy the top of the line Golf GTI sir? Would you like a rattle with that? Actually you can have it for free... it's a 'characteristic' - The characteristic it has added to my car is annoyance and a characteristic of bad quality.
I have purchased 2 brand new Hyundai's in my life and they never had any issues at all, no rattles, etc.. my Golf costs more then the 2 Hyundai's put together and it's rattling!! WTF!
I know for a fact that the VW dealers frequent these forums. Has any of the dealers made an effort to expedite a fix for this issue? Has any of the dealers offered any form of compensation for this issue? Let's not brush this under the carpet, IT IS AN ISSUE... My 50k car rattles!!!!

Quote of the day, from my wife.... "Stop washing your car... it's going to rain anyway"
I'm not to fussed about the noise of the rattle but just to be sure, I had VW Australia and my dealer confirm in writing that the "rattle" was normal, was not a defect and would have no effect on operation, performance or warranty.
I have an MY10 which does not have the rattle primary discussed here.
The rattle that you guys are talking about seem to sound like the rattle I always hear when I accelerated hard on all my previous cars- Mitsubitshi colt 1988, Toyota Startlet 2008, Ford Fiesta 2008 and Hyndai Getz 2010. All either old second hand or cheap cars.
VW should fix the issue simply because in Australia people have to fork out on average 50k for a top of the range car like the GTI.

It seems like VW's attitude to faults hasn't improved since I had a Golf Mk1 back in the 70's. It makes you wonder how they could spend so much money on development and testing of what they appear to think is a premium quality product and let it through to sales with such an obvious fault.
