    I can't hear it that much either, certainly not as bad as people make out.

    It's like how your noise is annoying if you look at it. You know it's there but most of the time look past it .

    The difference between APR and some "Australian-based Custom Exhaust Shop", is APR produce a lot of prototypes and do a lot of testing. If anyone thinks that you can rock up to some Australian exhaust shop to get a one off custom made exhaust and expect that they might make multiple prototypes and do thousands of km's of testing with sound measurements at various points in the car as well as outside the car and performance testing under different tunes and loads, then I think that person is delusional! Companies like APR, and Miltek like G-Rig mentioned do this, and that's why I differentiate them from "custom exhausts" - because they are "aftermarket production exhausts" - there's a difference.

    And no - I do not work for APR nor have any affiliation with them apart from being a multiple time happy customer.

    Not doubting the quality of materials used in aftermarket kits.

    Porsche spent $10 million euro & plenty of time in developing the exhaust scavenging & exhaust system for the Cayman.

    Which aftermarket mob would spend that amount on exhaust scavenging?

    The MK6 RSC exhaust and airbox seem to gain at least another 10kw atw (over the stage 1 tune) so mustn't be too bad.

    i have this rattle in my gti its got around 2500km atm, is it worth me taking it to the dealer to look at it? can it be fixed?

    Hi-Tech for instance do a quality exhaust that looks and sounds great for many cars. I know they even sometimes design them with improvements (cat placement) and there high flow cats are great. They use "kitchen quality" high grade steel not that tin can crap that rusts and they never drone. I think you'd love one If you heard it. They are not cheap though. And they are not that loud either. Excellent product.

    There is no way that a custom exhaust can be as good as either the OEM one or one produced by a reputable company where they have gone through many prototypes and have extensive knowledge of what works and what doesn't with the engine. Unless the custom exhaust "shack" is prepared to make constant changes to the design, materials used and placement of components you will never achieve a reasonable finish and it will always be a compromise in many areas.

    And APR's is the same thing. Its a custom exhaust. I have to ask you coreying, do you work for them cause you absolutely stand behind everything APR does?

    No they do research there designs. I know they had there STi exhaust for the 3G, beign worked over for ages with engineers getting the sound to meet legal noise and pollution limits, trying different hi flow cats (and there positioning) and they use excellent craftsman ship. They dont have those oval crap tin can mufflers there. I mean there mufflers cost around $2800. And they specialise in doing exotic cars also such as Porsche and Lambo. Not sure if they do Golf, but they do many expensive cars.

    And yes my exhaust just bolted on, was a high qaulity cut and finish. Also had expected power gains for the various models done on dyno. ( STi, WRX, etc)

    I no doubt APR are also very good either and dont call anything on there products as I havent seen them.

    By the way, I took the GTi for a test drive today for about 30-45 mins to see If I could find that rattle. It wasnt to be heard. I tried everything. 1500rpm to 3000rpm, low gear, high gear, and then wide open, medium and barely open throttle. No rattle!! (thank god theres hope mine might come normal). Maybe the slightest of whisps, but no not what i was imagining at all. To be honest It was that faint, I might of been imagining it. But no "steel wool spinning in can" or any slight raspy M3 ish sound at all.

    1600km's on it.

    Sounds like the good custom exhausts as you are describing Rexman would cost a lot more than off the shelf jobbies. No doubt they can be very well made. The other thing is workshops would have done a hell of a lot more WRX's and Skylines to know what works.

    They all sound different so it's personal choice, but hard to know what you're getting with customs if you can't see and hear the finished product first on someone elses car.

    Chances are that when i drove my car and if were to hear that noise, i would have thought it was normal .. now after reading 31pages ... its going to be in the back of my mind, but chances are, i would eventually get over it; I guess if i wanted to have 1 issue with the car, let it be this!
