Tyre Roar -v- Exhaust Scavenging Resonance

The exhaust scavenging resonance is not intrusive when you drive on B’grade coarse chip bitumen – esp. when it’s the older & coarser type. Roadway roar drowns out the resonance just nicely. Although, I’d rather some exhaust resonance than tyre roar.

If the resonance is that concerning, perhaps a modified exhaust system could be an option.

Having said that, I’m always amazed how guys pay big bucks for ‘custom exhausts’ only to find it mucks up the scavenging, reducing the vehicles performance. The word ‘custom exhaust’ does have a nice ring to it.

    Cheers.

I agree, the stock exhausts are usually designed very well and just becasue people have a custom one doesn't make it better and there are usually side affects (like drone). However are there any components of the exhaust that may fix the rattle for those that are worried? Mine doesn't seem that loud and dont notice it on full load.

Custom exhausts are too 'hit and miss' especially for the R32, and they usually end up being just as or more expensive anyway.

I personally think that custom exhausts suck. I've never been in a car with a "custom exhaust" that I think the exhaust hasn't ruined the car through drone or a yuck sounding exhaust note.

However, I must say that I don't consider exhausts like APR's RSC Exhaust to be a "custom" exhaust. APR spend considerable time and effort and numerous prototypes and lots of testing to create an exhaust for each model. So while they're not the original equipment, they're not exactly a custom built for each individual car which drives into some random custom exhaust shop either.

No drone yet a raspier and sportier tone is great. The added performance required for Stage II kits is also a big bonus. I personally can't wait to hear what the APR RSC Exhaust for the Golf R will sound like.

Got my GTI during the week and I can hear that noise. To me, its unacceptable. $13k cars dont have such intrusive noises. The demo I drove about 6 months ago didnt have this noise at all. If people are being told its normal, I think thats BS. Will see what my dealer says.

    Yes fair call.

The GTi interior absolutely spanks the WRX for interior quality, and not to mention spec levels possible. (DynAudio, ACC, RVC etc..). Also the Leather on the GTi.. too good mate. very BMW/Audi quality. And the Seats and steering wheel, I just fell in love with.

Thanks for reminding me why i want a GTi.

Didn't notice the noise on the demo I drove. Just went for a 20min night drive. I think I heard a whisp of it, but was straining to notice. GTI manual, 300km, 95 ron.

I think most professional car places in the industry do ample research, so that they add power, improve driveability and sometimes even save wieght.

Maybe you haven't been around good custom exhausts?

Hi-Tech for instance do a quality exhaust that looks and sounds great for many cars. I know they even sometimes design them with improvements (cat placement) and there high flow cats are great. They use "kitchen quality" high grade steel not that tin can crap that rusts and they never drone. I think you'd love one If you heard it. They are not cheap though. And they are not that loud either. Excellent product.

And APR's is the same thing. Its a custom exhaust. I have to ask you coreying, do you work for them cause you absolutely stand behind everything APR does?

I've been burnt by custom exhausts for my R32 after getting something made up that the US guys were running and turned out to be a nightmare. Not sure if they quoted the wrong part numbers but it was undriveable. N/A is a bit different as exhausts are easier on turbos when the turbo acts as muffler to some extent. I was much better off with the Milltek Resonated and should have got it in the first place as it ended up being $300 more than the custom job.

No doubt exhausts are cheaper on Jap cars and they've been around a lot longer so people know what works. Unless the shop is very good custom exhausts are hit and miss and they wouldn't do any testing compared to APR, Milltek etc if they are just making one for a customer.

I'll probably get the RSC as well, sounds great and no drone - it's possibly slightly quieter than stock when cruising and loud when you want it to be. I'll at least be getting the downpipe setup. The goog thing with brand name stuff is you can always sell it easily later compared to a custom job where people don't think it's worth much.

The RSC is good technology - good exhausts aren't too loud and droney.
