Maybe a Current Affair will solve the problem
I have the exact same rattle from the time i picked it up. I waited a week to see if it would quieten up....... but it didnt. I called up the stealersip and they told me to bring it in for a technician to look at it. I took it in on friday, had a technician come for a ride and within the first minute told me he knew what it was. He the proceeded to inform me it was the wastegate vibrating as it is opening.
Just like the post before, he gave me a printout,
Customer statement / workshop findings
Rattling or jarring noise from the engine compartment / exhaust system when accelerating between 2400 and 3000 rpm .
Technical background
Waste gate adjustment rod of the turbo charger rattles when accelerating.
Production change

Measure
Do not repair, the noises are construction-related and normal. There is no parts damage.
Warranty accounting instructions
This is no fault in the sense of warranty.
I have had a few turbo cars which I have modified and never come across this issue. I had a MK V GTI as well that never rattled. The tech advised that its a peformance car, and these noises are to be expected. Its a new engine from VW, and thats why my MK V didnt make the rattle. I would understand this if they told me it was a new turbo, a new design or material used, but if its the same as they have used on previous models there should be no noise.
I am still trying to figure out how a small rod can rattle so loudly. Im still convinced its a heatsheild / exhaust rattle. Come on VW, you can do better than this....... I hope.
I feel that if you guys are not happy with this, the only way you're going to go about finding a solution is to go to a VW specialist who is not a VW dealer.
Isn't that a sad statement. I totally understand what you mean but it's so understandable why people are frustrated with dealers. It was the same with MINI dealers where they would deny problems until a collective of owners got their info together and could provide some evidence.
tornado red GTI MkVI, 5dr, DSG, Sat Nav, RVC, MDI.
Red Honda Fireblade Red Cooper S (SOLD)
And that's what I'm saying. For all we know, what VW are saying is correct. Annoying, yes. but wrong, no.
So if you want some change to be made, someone who feels strongly enough about it needs to do some leg work of their own and determine what the issue is and what the resolution is.
If it turns out to NOT be the Waste gate adjustment rod, then there is grounds to approach VW and question them.
I just got my mk6 gti, and i havent got the rattle. I have 900km on the clock.
I do notice though, that when i go over bumps on an angle, the doors squeak as if they moved up and down. Its more of a rubber compressing noise. anyone else have this??
thx
There is info in that on this thread...

I took a GTI for a second test drive over the weekend, and specifically tried to replicate the rattle (the demonstrator had 70kms on the clock).
You can definitely notice it if the conditions are right - ie windows down, stereo off, a certain amount of revs, a certain amount of throttle. Even then, I only noticed a faint rattle about a quarter of the time.
However, I don't think many people would notice it if they weren't told it could rattle to begin with.

[and engine rattle accelerating @ 2-3k rpm ==> otherwise "it's a beauty"]
