You'll have to add "waste-gate flutter" to your long list of options MK6

I got it too, I get it more when I am in Drive, much less in Sport (in the DSG) prolly cos I am not spending too much time in the hot-zone of revs when I am flogging it.

I don't mind the sound much now that I know what it is. Maybe a new Stage III turbo from Volkspower will get rid of it..

Is it really that loud, like will you notice it if you dont "look" for it?
Is it that bad that you can't live with it?

It is not really that loud but under specific condition (slightly faster acceleration ... on about 2000rpm) it is, for short period of time, overpowering that GTI normal ( sound generator generated) exhaust noise.

For me it is less annoying than 118 TSI squealing noise BUT STILL ANNOYING.

I hate it and would be willing to pay a 3rd party to fix it if they could. However, my opinion is that VW should fix it under warranty. It is a characteristic of the car, but an unwelcome and unintentional one. It's like Toyota saying their "uncontrolled acceleration" is a characteristic of their cars and doing nothing about it. Well.... not quite....

For me, the sound occurs at a very common level of acceleration where the engine and road noise doesn't disguise the rattle. I was willing to overlook it when I wasn't sure what it was but knew the car was under warranty. Now I know what it is and know it won't be fixed. That gives me the

Why dont we bombard VWA with complaints??

Perhaps start a thread to bring it to everyones attention with a VWA contact email etc..

Maybe an idea? I mean i dont know mine has it, but it probably will by the sound of things..

    Thoughts??

I'd probably say you need to wait until you know whether it affects you or not before taking action?!

I've never bought a brand new car before and I'm going to be mighty pissed off if I spend $45k and find out it has some annoying noise out of the box which they refuse to fix...

    Red face

I took my GTI back to the dealership to assess the rattle after making an appointment with them. I took the workshop foreman with me for a drive and deliberately drove it in the rev range that usually generates the rattle. He admitted hearing the noise and even went so far to say "Yeah, I've heard it before, but not as loud as this". He started telling me that it may be something to do with the exhaust.

After we got back to the dealership, he took it to the workshop to put it up on the hoist to see if there was anything loose under the car etc. I think it was all of about 10 minutes before he came back and said that it was the operation of the turbo when it hit boost, and by his tone, it sounded like he'd encountered this before, or at least, he'd read a pre-prepared script on what to tell customers with this problem - an FAQ almost.

He explained that the rattle is caused by a disc that is responsible for opening the feed pipe to the engine, which is attached to a rod that the vibration/rattle also travels up, making it sound more pronounced. I should have asked if he had a diagram to show me exactly what part he was talking about, but I took the car into them in the morning and was running late for work. He told me that there was no fix for the rattle and that the car was operating as per normal.

I've been in quite a few turbo-powered cars, and none of them have ever rattled as a result of boosting. It seems very odd to me that a car maker with the reputation for quality that VW has would produce an engine that made this noise, and then pass it off as normal operation. I've been trying to get used to the rattle as normal engine noise, but it's ruining my experience with what otherwise is a brilliant car. I haven't completed my customer survey yet, so I might make mention of it and see if it provokes anything.

It's a real shame, as I've only ever owned Commodores before the GTI, and although Holden doesn't have a huge reputation for quality, I never really had any issues with any of them like this. It's disappointing to have made the switch to a different maker based on their reputation for quality and to have now had this experience...

Maybe a Current Affair will solve the problem
