MK6 GTI - Rattle upon acceleration - Resolved via TPI: 2021062/7

I've just ordered a GTI, will be a 2011 build and I really hope they have sorted this. I didn't realise how bad it was but I just watched a video (YouTube - Audi A3 8P - dziwny metaliczny d) and can say that sound would do my head in. Optioning the Dynaudio was probably a good idea, I'm gonna want that thing on 11 at all times.

I'm pretty sure that video does not demonstrate the issue discussed in this thread. For one... it's a 1.9L Diesel motor....

haha good point. I found the vid in a vortex thread about the 2.0T rattle (linked from this thread).

I searched that thread looking for the reference that the issue is fixed in the '11 builds but didn't find anything. Fingers crossed. My car isn't due till May so I'm sure someone will get an earlier '11 build who can report back.

haha hey mate, no not at all the xr5 will be staying on as the toy, I still can't get enough of that car. GTI will be the new daily. I might bring the xr5 on a golf cruise, seeing as I ended up with a day's worth of footage of the back of your 118 last xr5 cruise!

when i pick up my my11 mkvi sometime next week i'll be happy to listen for this noise and record it, should it appear. having driven a mkv gti for 3 years it should be pretty obvious if there are any new and interesting sounds. hopefully i'll be able to reduce some of the hypertension.

Done about 4000kms and still no rattle yet. A couple of times a week, I'd take my GTI to a back street somwhere in an industrial area late at night. Put it into S mode and floor it from 0-100. Do that a few times. No rattle. Hopefully it stays way.

Going to a backstreet and dumping it is not the way to hear the rattle.

It's the daily driving, low gears and relatively low RPM when you hear it.

You also need to load the engine by going up a hill.
I don't hear it on the flat.

i listened for this noise in a new my11 gti (dsg) driving it home this afternoon. i'm the kind of person who can tell if a tv is on, on the other side of the house because i can hear the high pitched interference noises crts and most flat panel tvs make. i certainly heard it, but it was entirely in keeping with all the other noises the car made. it did not stand out. i can produce and maintain the noise by keeping the engine under load around 2500 rpm or so, i didn't really note it, but the tacho pretty much never spends time at the rpm where the noise occurs. i was expecting a noise like a hyundai accent with a fart can, going by some of the descriptions i'd heard. no such animal.

many e9x m3s exhibit a heat shield rattle that is audible from outside the car. several metres away. they cost well over 100k. this is a transient and relatively unobtrusive noise. in fact the little rasp was actually a welcome break from the teutonic efficiency with which a mkvi conducts its business, at least compared to a mkv.

i'll keep listening as the exhaust etc. continue to bed in. maybe it'll become as bad as some people have described.
