    So am I.

Also I agree with those that say if you have to listen for it, you probably dont have the issue. Its obvious under all conditions.

Since a lot of people test drove the car and didnt hear it, it must be something thats crept into the production around the start of the year.

In 1500kms I never heard the noise, even when driving next to a concrete barrier with the window down and radio off.
If you dig a hole and it is in the wrong place, digging it deeper isn't going to help.

Nope. I took delivery of my GTI on October 30 2009 and the noise has been there since day 1.

People that have car without the noise will be of enormous help to this cause. How can a noise that is a "characteristic of the car" not be present? If VWA refuse to fix cars afflicted with the rattle, then we should demand they "fix" those without!

Drive in a tunnel with the front passenger side window open, in 3rd gear under mild accelation between the 2400 and 3000 rev range.

The rattle will be loud and clear.

The wierd thing is I also didn't hear it when doing a test drive. It sounds terrible, but at least it is "mostly" harmless. I'm guessing if it didn't rattle the part would last longer however. Mechanically, a rattle usually increases stress on components....

In the 3 GTI's I tested, I never had the rattle sound. Doing about 30km in each.

The last 2 of those times, I was aware of the rattle, and could not recreate ANY sound like that, that people have been talking about.

If it was there I would have heard it.

    PS Should I buy a E46 2004 M3 instead.

I think I have it, but I'm not sure. Worse when it's colder I find. Too many other noises coming from my car to notice this one

My squeaky bush is starting to drive me mad!! That's bush league...that's what that is....

I deliberately drove my car this arvo with the radio off to try and hear the noise. There was nothing obvious at all.

Hey Tux. Tell you what, for a small fee I'll swap your abnormal Golf that is missing the "characteristic" noise, for my normal one (according to VW) which has the "characteristic" noise in abundance!

    Hi mfl,

About that "oil sweat" - is it on the turbo inlet?

Before water pump was replaced, did you have any changes in the coolant level and was it (w/pump) broken suddenly or...?

"oil sweat" on the turbo inlet - is it normal?

    thank you

    Hi mirsad,

The coolant warning came on while driving and on checking the overflow tank it was low and hence the warning light. the engine temp. stayed normal and there was no obvious leak. but I needed to top up the overflow tank every couple of days. a pressure test showed up the leak from the waterpump and it was replaced.

as for the oil leak I had my car serviced at VW Village and they said there was an oil leak from the turbo, and the dealer said it was 'oil sweat' and was normal. there are no oil drops under the car. the dealer said when there are bring it back. I will need to get the car up on a hoist to see it for myself.
