The fact of the matter is that some people don't notice the noise (like my wife), some people notice it, but don't care and some people (like me) do notice it and their engineering and/or motorsport background says it is not only annoying but fixable.
That VW (worldwide) writes it off as a normal characteristic of the engine is in my opinion, going to bite them very hard in the future.

PS. Having highlighted the issue of this noise, I hope you notice it in your Golf, afterall, it is a "normal characteristic" according to VW.
GTI Cam, thanks for your feedback.. i'll keep my ears open when i do receive my car end of the month

    Agree 100% with GTICam.
heard the sound from day1 of delivery - and still hearing it.

Noowve - partly wind down the front passenger window, turn off the music, accelerate from 2000rpm and voila

Unlikely. The Golf R is using the same turbo and engine used in the MKV Golf Pirelli/30th and the Audi S3 for quite some time....

So its due to the K3/K03 you have mentioned elsewhere? hmm.. any idea what the mkv pirelli/mk VI R turbos are good for KW wise?

My GTi was built in Jan 010 and that tinny exhaust noise has been there since day one also.
It is easily heard with windows up, radio either off or down low.
Hubby and I didnt notice it on the demo car we had for 3 hrs, and that was driven with the radio OFF the whole time for the simple fact that
we were signed up to purchase a 118TSI last September but thanks to Mirsad and a few others who had posted the "chirp" sound on another
forum, we cancelled out. (Hey Mirsad, I have finally joined up here - formerly Maz6)

Now to add to this, last weekend we went to two local dealerships and test drove 2 x GTI's and guess what? They both had what I describe as tinny exhaust
rattle when accelerating at between 2000 - 3000 rpms.

Another reason we wanted to test drive them was because we are getting what we believe to be excessive cabin noise - we think mostly from the tyres.
We have stock standard 17" rims with Bridestone Potenza's. One GTi test car had Michellins and the other had Dunlops (both 17" rims)
We felt the Dunlops seemed quieter.
The demo car we had was fited with 18" Detroits and Dunlop tyres and we are sure it was definitely quieter, so have an appointment with car dealer next Wednesday to compare all this......but just our luck we now find out the demo car has been sold!
These tyres are making a droning noise on bitumen thats not real course even and it is worse than the exhaust rattle, as its pretty much constant.
Also sadly for us the front bumoer has a paint run and will have to be re-sprayed - not happy Jan! Wish we had noticed this at the pre-delivery....would
not have taken the car. So intend to mention exhaust rattle to them as well.
As this is my first post, I havent looked to see if tyre noise has already come up on a seperate thread, oh yeah I should mention the demo was fitted with ACC,
    which we dont have either
We cant put up with this road noise and had no idea it would be different than the demo car - even with the 18" rims?
Will be costly for us to have the fork out for 4 new tyres now too and what to choose anyway AND what if it didnt improve the noise?
We need to rule out if its also excessive cabin noise. Their other demo has got the 17" Bridgestone Potenza's so hope thats still there to do comparisson at least.

I think it's probably the roads you are driving on. Chip seal/Bitumen is a lot louder than Asphaltic Concrete (as you pointted out), but various brands of new tyres should all be fairly similar and quiet when new. It's when they wear that they get louder and the Dunlop Sport Maxx are no exemption (and try driving a car with semi slicks, gets very loud gradually so you don't notice it).

You could always get some extra sound deadening put in at an audio shop if you're worried about road noise, this pic is from another forum but shows they've done the entire floor. The area around the wheel wells would help reduce a lot of it:

The MKV GTI and MK6 GTI have a K03 Turbo. The MKV GTI Pirelli/30th Anniversary/MK6 Golf R/Audi S3/TT-S all use a K04. I'm not exactly sure what the limits of the K04 are, but in a Golf R with APR Stage II+ (with apr hpfp, downpipe, carbonio intake, and a few other mods like turbo discharge pipe (between turbo and intercooler) and between intercooler and throttle body)) you'll get around 255kw and 480nm. Beyond this and you'll need to go for a bigger turbo and other supporting mods to reach the next jump - such as the APR Stage III kit which gives you 300kw/500NM.

GTI Mk6 Rattle Sound when acceleration

Hi members, not sure whether you have heard such a noise..

i picked up GTI MK6, drive is great enjoying every minute of it.. however when i accelerate a little hard there is some minor rattling sound.. sound like it's coming from the exhaust metal tip when acceleration. is this normal because the car is still new and therefore all the metal components take time to settle in?

has anyone here faces a similar issue? all your feedback is greatly appreciated.

If you'd used the search function, you would have found a thread with an almost identical title. I've linked it below with the page number with the answer. And no there is no fix.
