Just to let you know that my GTI has only done 330Kms and I can already hear the infamous 'rattle' accelerating in the 2-3000 rpm
Great scientific explanation. The other observation was the rattle disappeared when I have my wife in the front and two noisy kids on the back. I thought the weight had something to do with it but this morning I drove to work by myself, there is an elevated level of rattle but not to the same degree to when it was at full tank. It may be the cold weather - there are too many variables here. I agreed, my observation is not scientific but thought I add this so you guy can interpret this for me.

[and engine rattle accelerating @ 2-3k rpm ==> otherwise "it's a beauty"]
Just wanted to add that I have the rattle in my GTI too. Only 230km on the odo.
I haven't or cbf reading all 16 pages, but from reading the OP's post I would say it would be something to do with the rear exhaust tip or hanger etc..

My GTI has about 800kms on the clock. It is noticable sometimes, but variations with weight, temperature seem to affect how often I hear it. Either that or I got selective hearing. Its not really bothering me at the moment, but is definately there.

Well here is my part.
I first drove the new GTI a week after its release in Europe last year. I drove it for almost two hours so I am sure if there was a rattle I would have noticed it.
I noticed it almost as soon as I picked mine up in Australia in January. My partner drives it during the day as I have a work car so it didn't bother me too much at first, but it is now. I took it in earlier this week to VW Osborne Park and after a day of testing they accept the noise is there (on mine and the rest of the ones they have in stock) and brought it up with VW Aus, who of course said it was a characteristic of the car. Characteristic my ass, I`m dealing with VW Aust direct now and will update you if I get anywhere. I guess if I can be bothered taking the time to sue I have a few of you for a class action
