    I guess you could have either said "okay, if you throw in RVC too" or simply ordered RVC at full price with no pushing involved.

    If the order was placed just 3 weeks ago it should not be too late to amend and would give you one of the best value options on the list.

    (You might have read of the time and trouble Maverick went to to put an RVC in his Mark V. It took many hours and cost $750 or more in parts alone.)

    Insist!

    $500 is not something to quibble about on a $40k car let alone one worth half as much again!!

    And which do you find more functional.

    I use the camera for reversing, but still use mirrors and headchecks. In very bright light the OPS may be more useful since colours on the RVC can be washed out. OPS is very handy for forward manoeuvres - bollards and kerbs are detected and highlighted around the silhouette.

    I'd like a firmware upgrade, but my service manager said there are none available. No map upgrades either. Contrary to what I've read here. Either they haven't been officially released for the Australian market, or he's full of it.

    Yeah the overlay distorts the camera view rendering the image useless ... <where has the face palm smiley gone???>

    OK, I said "most likely", assuming it was a full screen overlay. I stand corrected.

    So does the firmware upgrade come with Spanish subtitles or do you have to pay extra for that?

    The photo is from Spain, logically his language is set to the local language.

    But back on topic...

    If we can presume from his deliberations that Lawsy is:

    - more concerned with performance than economy;
    - happy to purchase second hand;
    - does not mind not having the latest body shape (and a 3 year warranty); and
    - is not to fussed about efficiency or fuel economy,

    then the R32 would probably be the go.

    If he buys well, he should get far more bang for his buck acquiring a well-optioned 2008 R32 than he would purchasing a new GTI.

    But if he:

    - would prefer the latest, if not necessarily the greatest;
    - is concerned about fuel economy and overall efficiency, sustainability and those types of things;
    - would like the peace of mind of buying new and of a 3-year warranty and of buying the current model; and
    - can bide his time,

    then he should seriously consider sticking with the new GTI.

    XDL must go some way to addressing the few shortcomings the GTI had as a performance FWD car and narrow the handling gap with AWD under most conditions.

    Unless Lawsy is regularly switching from one car to the other, he will probably get as much driving pleasure from a new GTI as he would from an R32.

    So if the priorities are:

    - Outright performance and grip and getting a car now, go the R32;

    - Efficiency and peace of mind, go the Mark VI GTI.

    I did not even consider the R32 as I was in the market initially for a GTD before switching to a GTI which did everything I wanted (except accept snow chains I found out later). To top it off, the sales manager firmly expressed the view that the GTI was a much more practical town car than the R32 which was not even on my radar.
