Thread: MK6 GTI cancelled - is a R32 an option?

    I was going to buy a GTI based on reviews VS the R32. But after test driving I realised you cannot rely on some elses opinions and ended up getting the R32 simply because I enjoyed the drive more, not because the reviewer told me it was more 'nimble' or more 'fun and zippy', words which meant nothing to me really as I did not know what emotion he/she was trying to convey. Kind of like reviewing a pair of sunnies and calling them 'nice.

    The best advice was that the OP should test drive both and decide, they are both great cars but fairly different in terms of power delivery (however turbo isn't always faster or better).

    I agree the R32 is always a hoot to drive and more usable power for the street. No point losing your license or always waiting for the turbo and doing excessive speeds.

    Choosing your car

    I saw the Top Gear R32/BMW 130i show and lusted after and R32 from that moment on. They were so rare in Sydney at that stage that i could not even get a test drive in a DSG Mk V R32.

    Was admiring one in the main street of Bowral when the owner saw me looking at his car and came over to talk to me. I asked him what he thought of the R32 and he said that he loved it. Told him I was thinking about one but couldn't even get a test drive. He threw me the keys and said "Don't bend it and don't get booked". A short drive later I was hooked but I do a lot of motorway country kms and to my mind the R32 was a little low geared in 6th and the magic exhaust note not all that beautiful at a constant 110kph on the freeway. ( He still has the R32 and has added an R36 wagon to his stable)

    Kept an eye on the second hand market and then saw an advert for a new R32 at my local dealer. (had already purchased a Mk VI diesel for my daughter from them). Went in to arrange a test drive and saw this beautiful VW that I had never seen before. It was a V6 CC. Salesmansaw me coming, knew I was serious about a new car, gave me the keys and said "See you in an hour and I know you will buy this car.

    I was in love. A few windy roads, some country broken stuff and a 20 minute trip along the freeway told me that this was the car for me. Went like all ****. Stuck like #### to a baby's blanket and was more respectably quiet inside. Put my deposit down on a CC V6 two days later.

    Next weekend drove my daughter's 103 TDI from Wollongong to Bowral via Macquarie Pass and was held up by all modes of traffic. Dawned on me that in most instances even the 103 TDI was quick enough for most situations and was also a very pleasant highway cruiser.

    Got home. Slept on it, or should I say had a sleepless night, and the next day cancelled my CC V6 order and replaced it with a CC 125 TDI which now has 5500km on the clock and I have enjoyed every one of them -while never seeing less than 1100km on around 64 litres of diesel (at 117.9 cents a litre).

    Sure I miss the excitement of the V6 on the rare occasions that I would be able to use its potential. But the moral of the story is buy the car that most suits what you want to do with it. I do 600-700 kms per week of mainly freeway/motorway driving mixed with a bit of city peak hour traffic. And I am doing it very comfortably, very economically and very environmentally consciously (in honesty the last of my genuine concerns).

    Since purchasing the CC I have also had an extended test drive in a MK VI GTi and all I can say is that VW have a very inspiring stable of cars which they are selling to cover most areas of the market and to make our choices somewhat difficult. I can see why the GTi has such an avid following.

    To th OP, buy an R32 or a GTi. Both are huge fun performance cars. If you want real grunt buy a WRX STI or and EVO but the R32 and GTi are very livable every day drives that make you take the long way to work just so you can prolong the journey. Low Km R32s are looking very reasonable in many of the adverts I see and i am sure that whoever sells their low km R32 has more than a tinge of regret when they hand over the keys. Or they are moving to an R36 or V6 CC.

    But in this day and age, you cannot genuinely expect to justify the purchase of a performance car on environmental responsibility and sustainability. It is an emotional and maybe even selfish purchase, but thank heavens, one we are still able to make.

    The car you really want is usually going to just that little bit more expensive than the one you can afford. My first special car, a Fiat 124S Coupe purchased in 1968 cost me a year and a half's pay but it had a twin cam engine and a five speed box, radical at that time and was written up as "the best handling car this side of a Porsche ( which cost about 5 years pay at that stage))

    Just as there are those of us who will staunchly defend our VWs no matter what the reliabilty issues may be, there are just as many who will defend their MK 1 or 2 or 3 etc or their GTi or their R32 or R36 or CC. Great to see that there is such passion in VW owners but it is nice if we can respect each other's rights to our opinions and choice of vehicle. There in so single right solution for everyone.

    You know you are getting old when you cancel your order for a 3.6 CC and buy an Icelandic Gray TDI CC instead.

    Great story Highlander, I think you summed it up well. CC is a very nice car.

    Personally, I don't quite understand what is almost a slanging match or rivalry between some people over the decision to buy a GTI or an R32. I purchased a GTI, but would happy drive a R32 any day of the week.

    I think 99% of GTI owners believe the R32 is a great car ... and vice versa. Interesting to think that if one of these two vehicles were not available, whether all of us would still have purchased a vehicle from the VW stable.

    I also think that a fair portion of GTI owners that would have chosen the R32 as their second choice of car (especially if price was the same!) ... and vice versa.

    To cut a long story short. Both are VW's, both are great cars, both drive a little differently, but both are aimed at a slightly different market ... but throw me the keys to either any day of the week and I would be happy to take it for a spin ... or keep in my garage for 12 months!

    A May delivery is possible... Depends on how long it takes for them to get the cars from the factory to the docks... If timing is against you and you just miss the boat, the next one just might not arrive until May...

    Hey, elisiX, shouldn't you be getting the RVC as well seeing it is only $500 extra?

    As the RNS510 and RCD510 both support the RVC it is a very low marginal cost to add this significant feature, don't you think (and only a tiny % on top of your fully loaded car)?

    You seem to have specified every other more costly option (except power driver's seat and Bluetooth). Was leaving out the RVC an oversight? As the lowest cost factory option it certainly gives bangs for your bucks.

    (BTW William, Lawsy is in Brisbane, and so too his dealer presumably. Perhaps other buyers circling and threatening to "take the bone away" will focus his mind.)
