the mk IV came with one
Is is possible to buy a non remote (dumb) key for current VWs? Not keen on leaving my car keys in the wheel well when I go surfing. The 2 provided remote keys will drown if i take them swimming. So I reckon I need a plain old metal key. is there such a beast?

I have one of these when I paddle my kayak, and they are indeed solid units. If I forgot the combo, I reckon I'd be screwed, as the tumblers are a quality unit. Mine isn't this exact brand, but it's a full metal jobbie with a very solid lock. I clip it onto my towbar eyelets.

Greg that Key Safe looks like it would be a workable solution. My preference would be for small waterproof key that i could carry with me. Is this actually possible or do all the modern keys need a chip in them for the immobiliser? Is it in fact a valet key I am after?

You can even get non genuine ones and get them cut just get the cut code off your dealer if its only for what you want it for putting it in the water then why not get a cheap non gen one if you get a key with a transponder it prob wont work after getting it wet alot depends how well sealed it is not sure if you can get them for Immobilizer 4 yet but

If you want to hide your normal remote in the car and lock it with a "dead" key then it is very simple to just buy a blank plain key without an immobiliser chip. Lots of good locksmiths can do a computer controlled VW key cut, some will even have a VAG blank available. If not, blanks are readily available on line.
If you really want a key that will operate your engine that his a whole new (and more expensive) ball game. The only place I've found that can supply an immobiliser chip that works in modern VAG vehicles is the VAG dealer, and you also have to get the ECU programmed to recognise the new key. The immobiliser chip is totally waterproof (but not the remotes).
Remember to wipe off the salt water before putting it in the lock, otherwise it will corrode the pins/wafers.
