The key is 'sort of' notched (grooved each side — looks like half a worm-hole in an apple.)

Price? You don't want to lose one...

Don't know the exact Australian price, but it's well into the hundreds (probably plus a hefty fee if you can't program it yourself.)

Here's a reference to it from the US — (it's for MKV, but I don't think the keying has changed for the Mk VI)

The price here might easily be double that in the US.

Replacement Keys - VW GTI Forum / VW Rabbit Forum / VW R32 Forum / VW Golf Forum - Golfmkv.com

Note the keys used in the US might not work here — I've a notion the radio frequency is different.

    Mk6 Key

    Hey all,

Picked up my car a few days ago; love the driving!

Quick question, i have 2 keys that came with the car, but they dont have the red panic button on them nor does it have the valet key.

I remember watching a youtube clip by "Ask a VW sales guy" and he was going over the keys .. i wonder if its a Mk5 version or a US version.

    Its a GTI MK6 - FEB 2010 build.

Ask A VW Sales Guy is American based. The panic button and valet key is for the American market only.

Going by the amount of agony, worry, and angst in the posts on this forum, the panic button might be useful for the Australian market.

Worried you haven't run the engine in properly? Panic button!
Is that a rattle in my new Golf? Panic button!
Can't make the #$%#@ search function on this forum work? Panic button!

Lol... you know it's not a "page VW panic button" right?
It's a "some scary dude in this dodgy car park is about to kill me and I'm not going to get to my car in time so I'll set the alarm off to hopefully deter him from murdering me"-type panic button.

I do, however I'm sure that for a case of beer Mav would develop the mod so that pressing it pages VWA.

    Replacement Key...

I just got a price from a VW dealer for a spare key of $297
This breaks down as $198 for the key + $99 to code it

Is this a good deal or are there cheaper ways around it ?

I only got 1 key when I bought my car so need a second one for the missus 

My sister had her Mk5 Golf key replaced for $430 at Barloworld Five Dock in January this year so $297 is a pretty good deal.

I'd grab that deal with both hands they usually charge up to $500 to order and programe a new key .
