In a bog standard GTI (with no fancy kit selected), can I still hook my phone into the stereo via BT to simply answer calls via my handset? (So no numbers on the RNS display etc).

doesn't sound like it elisiX
Reason I ask that specific question is that I was sure my dealer told me I could still do this (reason for me not selecting a BT kit).
I dont need it to display on my screen - just mute the stereo and I can control the call and contacts from the handset.

I have all the options except Xenons and I still can't link the phone via BT. I'd have to get a BT module. Or, to be completely thorough in my testing, Xenons. You know, in the Sherlock Holmes sense.

elisiX - the standard GTI has no Bluetooth functionality at all. You will need a kit of some sort - ranging from the sun-visor clip-ons to $2000 "premium" kits.
the dealer I bought by GTi from offered dealer fitted bluetooth for $900. I decided it was too expensive.
I think this thread is getting abit confusing.
In regards to all the MK6 Golfs. Bluetooth is not standard. Its optional.
The NON Premium Bluetooth offering offically from VW Australia is very basic. It simply turns the Phone button on your streering wheel 'ON'. So you can answer and hang up calls, thats it.
You cannot see numbers or names of whos calling on any of the displays in the car, you cannot see contacts. nothing. It is simply there to answer and hang up calls.
The Premium unit is $2000 and it ONLY works with handsets that support a profile called Remote Sim Access. And with that it only supports certain radio frequencies (I think Telstra support these, but not Optus or Vodafone?). This kit DOES let you view contacts, names, numbers etc etc on the screens in the car. However it is very very expensive and only works on select phones.
Now this is where the standard Skoda kit comes in, It works just like the premium unit does. You can view your names, contacts, numbers, missed calls etc etc. However you are not restricted to using a phone that only supports Remote Sim Access. And its alot cheaper then VW's Premium offering.
The only question here is, that we have no confirmation if VW Dealers can order and install the Standard Skoda Bluetooth kit. If they can its great!!! as this is the unit people who want a full functioning bluetooth setup should be aiming to get. However if VW Dealers cannot order and install, you have to resort to going to a third party (Volkspower is one in Vic that can apparently order and install, however im not sure about their garentee's or warranty).
The other option is, you can order it off ebay from some company in Polland for $450AUD including shipping, and then try and get your VW Dealer to install it, or even go to Volkpower (if you are in Victoria) and get them to install it.

Well $450 + local install sounds better than $900 for the crappy version dealer fitted or $2000 for the premium fitted.
I imagine European Autotech (Derek) in Mona Vale could install for Sydney peeps.
