So this morning I decided to cancel the tow truck and rang RAC mobile battery service. It was the battery after all. The RAC man said the battery voltage was too low. He connected up his mobile battery and the symptoms were the same. Switched in a new one and started first time. He checked that the battery was charging well with the headlights on high beam and I was off.
Still get an ESP error but I was confident that it would stay running. Will check later if the error goes off.
Wasn't fun standing in the rain watching him change the battery over (I suppose I could have sat in the car).
Thanks to all for the advice - saved me some money and time.

ESP error will go away as soon as you start driving it. System just needs to re-calibrate itself after a power outage.

Mine died at 4.5 years, fortunately it was at my local petrol station, who is also an auto electrician, who had a suitable battery in stock.

Lights and radio was working, but car wouldn't start.

After battery replaced ESP and tyre warnings lights on, both disappeared after driving 500 metres.

Positive terminal covered in green crud, which wasn't there a couple of months ago.

Recommended replacement car battery on a VW golf TSI 118

    Hello,
Recently my car battery died and had to get NRMA to jumpstart, and since my car is ~4 years old, it is about time I replaced my battery.

    1. I was just wondering if you have any recommendations on a good, long-lasting car battery that's not too adversely affected by extreme cold/heat? By that I mean a low of -6 degrees in winter, and around 40 in summer)

    2. NRMA did ring me up with a deal offering to replace my car battery with a 'premium' battery (I forget what brand) & dispose of the old one for about $230. Is it a good deal?

I'm leaning towards #1 at the moment. That is, buy the battery myself and get it replaced.

    Thanks very much!

Hi howsta. As you are in Melbourne, Everybattery (Every Battery: Buy a car battery online, or a Deep Cycle Battery. All Battery types for sale, cheap! We beat battery world prices in our battery shops daily.) stocks after-market Varta batteries - Blue and Silver Dynamic - where both are available to match the physical dimensions and have superior CCA performance to your Volkswagen OEM Varta battery. There are other stockists of these batteries, which may be more conveniently located. The price of the after-market Varta batteries should be much cheaper than the original.

    Thanks Mikey!
Was this the battery you recommend?

Hi howsta again. Assuming you compared the physical case dimensions and terminal layout of your Volkswagen OEM Varta battery with the $219 E43 Blue Dynamic and got a match, then yes, this would be suitable. Of course, the dimensionally similar $259 E38 Silver Dynamic would be even better, but shouldn't be necessary unless you want the top of the range and maximum performance in the flooded calcium SLI class of battery. There is another consideration, which might seal the deal for you. This relates to the warranty. The Blue Dynamic range has a 24 months full replacement warranty, but the Silver Dynamic range has an even better 36 months full replacement warranty. Of course, some will argue these premium high capacity batteries should last a lot longer than 3 years and I would agree. But still, a 36 month warranty is impressive in its own right.

    Hi Mikey,
Given how infrequent the car battery will get replaced, I think I'm gonna fork out out an extra $40 for a better quality battery - the Silver Dynamic.

    Thanks again

No problem. While I also have a Silver Dynamic battery (though the slightly taller E44 version of the one you selected for your model), there is no actual difference in quality, only capacity and warranty. Please remember to check your original battery's case dimensions, terminal polarity, position and size to ensure you obtain the correct fit.

My battery died this morning. RACV came out and fitted a new one. A few error lights on the dash as mentioned above, which disappeared as soon as I started driving, but I have lost the one touch windows up/down. Any ideas how to get them back?
