the extreme tune needs a specific intake because the uses a 3" MAF housing instead of the standard 2.75". If you were to use a standard size intake with that tune then the ECU air flow reading would be incorrect due to the different calibration.
There are reports on international forums with K04 peoples and aftermarket CAI's. For some reason the K04 cars are ultra sensitive to the positioning of the MAF when the CAI replaces the entire pipe. I'm not sure whether this can be taken into account by the ECU tune since you're getting a custom tune rather than "off the shelf", but this issue has been reported by customers of at least 3 of the major off-the-shelf ECU manufacturers. GIAC's K04 "Extreme" tune mandates a specific intake (VF Accessories K04 CAI). I wonder whether it's just because it's "superior" to the EVOMS and Neuspeed (and several other intakes of similar design, at least from a visual standpoint), or whether it's just because of this sensitivity on the MAF position and therefore by specifying a specific intake for the tune they only need to account for the one design (and thus, reducing variables etc).
I'll leave it to the engineers to answer that though![]()

Thanks Tim. The VF K04 CAI is the only one with a 3" housing?
I had a friend install the Milltek for me which saved some $$$, I didn't get a chance to go to WSID tonight as I've been sick with the flu for the past two days but I plan on going next Wednesday, let's hope it doesn't rain!!
I've completed all the stage 2+ mods on the car so keen to get it out on the strip...

I normally have things on a Saturday morning but as its school hols on the dyno day I'm going to try to get a day pass off the wife and come over. Will be good to compare a few different R's and mods on the same dyno and same day.
Golf R 5 door, DSG, EVOMS CAI, TXS DP, Recode Tune.
I thought I would share an interesting link I found of a modded Golf R.

It does 0-100 in 4.8 secs, and has had quite a few mods done to it.. looks like an equivalent of a STG 3 or there abouts.
