Well got down to Calder tonight, finally.

Ambient Temp started @ 12.5c, and by the final run is was 9.0c

    Here are the results:

    1st Run:
    13.356 104.69mph 2.096 60ft

    2nd Run:
    13.279 104.23 2.098 60ft

    3rd Run:
    13.300 105.22mph 2.096 60ft

    4th Run:
    13.125 104.64mph 2.052 60ft

I was a little disappointed in the results to be honest, but better tricks to come shortly with a little change coming up.

Can't ask for much better temp wise. DSG doesn't seem to launch that hard because your 60ft times aren't that quick for a 4wd car. Surprised at the low terminal speed given the level of mods you've got.

Reasonable results, about what I expected.

I think the times ran (on a grippy track) indicate the low 4s measured previously by the G Tech was way off.

Fabs, do you have the latest revision of the APR stage 2+ tune which was revised around the start of April? I done my previous 1/4 mile runs with the old revision so I plan on doing some more with the new revision to compare times.

    a) Dont be disappointed FAB_R!! they are good solid times mate. To put into perspective your as fast as an MY05 M3! And very close to spanking new M3.

    b) Keep in my mind mate although they are a touch heavier (80-odd KGs) than the M3, buy they dont launch at 3000rpms like our cars.. they launch at like 6000rpm's!! And thats where your 2 tenths are!

Great effort for our little Golf's mate. Great result.

People in the game for a long time know the difference between magazine quotes, G-Tech times and the strip when all mixed in with marketing hype at a cars launch to make something sound like its the quickest thing on the street. Im not saying that just because you havent really done anything other than an exhaust you dont know what your talking about.. actually.. yes I am.

Same thing was when the E92 M3 came out some people on other forums were saying it does a 12.2 1/4 mile.. PFT!! Good luck with that. And yes they were quoting G-Tech times.
And ofcourse it was shortly after the car was released.. ect etc. Like I said nothing knew If youve been into this stuff for a while.

Not to have a digg at anyone in particular, but if your arguing with everyone about this stuff you have to know what your talking about, cause me and a *couple of others got crucified for saying what has now been proven many times.. Apology time prehaps ?

I dont need one, i am just saying I knew I was on the right track when it came to this stuff anyway, so just ackowledging that.

Mate I'd be surprised if my car nailed a 5.8 let alone a 5.7 to a 100 stock. And after driving Corey's car when it was stg 1 I KNEW there was no chance a STG 1 gives the Kilowatts suggested by APR (51KW peak increase - no one here has nailed a 13 sec with just stg 1 - not even close and im still waiting for it to be acknowledged). It felt about 3 tenths quicker. Or 20KWs at the wheels. Significant but not accurate to the advertisments.

Tunes seem like a good way to go, and offer a very robust and very reliable method of modding, epsecially if you want to keep it low key.. But they are just a tune, and a GOLF R is not some 400HP monster waiting to be unleashed with a tune like a GTR or BMW 335.. REXman FTW.

nah mate mine only launches at around 3200rpms maybe a touch more if you time it right. To get a 1.8+ 60' time, you need to be SNAPPING off the line a la side step/dump the clutch styles at 5000rpms+++ (6500 rpms really!!). The DSG just gives a nice little push off the line. It shouldnt be called "launch" control maybe "take -off-better-than-in-D" control.

But In saying that I gotta add one last thing about this car the Golf R.

After driving the R for a while now, and then reading about the various hot hatches you can buy (such as the Megane RS and the Focus RS) being extremely quick on the track, bee knees etc etc. Something has hit me.

When driving around, I just dont speed that much anymore. YOU CANT!! there are cops everywhere. there a gazillion cameras about, saftey cams, the works you name it they are watching. Its ridiculous.

I might give my car a small squirt once a month now on the off chance it late and no one about on some quite bit for like 20 seconds. Where i used to give older cars I owned a good thrashing a few times every week before all the "speeding kills" double demerit holidays stuff etc crippled the roads for people who arent idiots (drive drunk and travel ludicrously fast)..

This is not to take away from cars like the Focus RS, terrific car to drive Im sure. But mate, on the outside it looks like young kids wet dream, plastic wings etc.. and is offered in lime Green for fux sake. On the inside it looks like Mitsu Mirage, interior is disgusting and looks like a $20K car.

Megane looks like a space ship and you have gay gadgets like a lap timer (see *wank) on the inside on this ****ty little black and white screen - cause there is no Sat nav or anything nice in terms of options.

But one thing about the VW is that everything from that amazing steering wheel for the price range, to the spongy soft dash board, solid closing doors, class and sleekness all whilst being low key and good on insurance and petrol.. WIN. WIN. WIN.

If i was to buy again, and had the choice of all the cars mentioned, i would buy the R - everytime. It honestly brings a smile to my face everytime I drive it. Maybe mor than any of the rockets I have owned before it is that good. Bluetooth, MDI, Sat Nav, DVDs at the lights, LEDs, ACC etc what a wicked package - that the comp doesnt come close to delivering. And in these times were speeding and being a hoon is not only frowned upon- is also to damn costly- the R just does everything a car needs these days better.

And it goes pretty well too.

    Golf R FTW.

(excuse me getting a bit WJ with my post [sorry WJ] ).

Good to catch up with you Fab and mate I rekon you have a 12.9 in that thing for sure if you run with less fuel next time and remove the spare tyre and jack... but mainly the fuel mate. And I agree.... would not be dissapointed with those times at all bro

hey just wanted to add this very interesting article regarding a cars performance and measuring different criteria and how accurate that criteria is.

Well Corey_R last time said to me that performance was NOT all about power to weight.. and its not an accurate indicator of performance.

    Read this article my friend!

    Browser Warning

    Cheers

Other than MPH at the quarter mile mark, it is the BEST indicator of a cars performance.

Good article that, like the breakdown of data, I always wondered of the value of torque in all this as u see many cars with huge torque but crap power produce rubbish numbers at the strip . Trap speeds have always been the better bragging topic of quarter miles in my opinion... Some awd's do get the great ET's however yield a pathetic trap speed.
Still though fab.... Less fuel and 12.9 mate, plus u were getting quicker as the air got colder last night.

Yeah temp was pretty good, and times were dropping as with my last run.
The launches to be honest were not nice and considered soft IMO, it just wasnt feeling right.

In the past the best launches ive had was were it launched at 3,500-4,000rpm, and sometimes it does it.

Yeah i agree totally. Gtech i think is NQR.
    Example, first run Gtech 0-100 5.5sec & 1/4 12.50. Pfft

Again, when i tested side by side with Vbox it was out, but the best achieved with Vbox which has cred was 0-100 of 4.49sec

Hey ferret, yeah mate i do, got it done within the week it was released. To drive it felt better.
Will be interesting to see what difference it will make with your R.

Thanks REXman. Not too dissapointed, maybe a little. I guess keeping it in perspective re the M3 data old & new is encouraging.
Next time i will be trying a few different things like perhaps 18" rims, no spare, less fuel etc.
And with the ALCONS going in shortly, that will be a 16kg weight saving.

Hey Adam, great to catch up and meet you finally, it was good to have a chat.
I will try that next time for sure mate. Every little bit makes a difference. I'll run it next time on close to empty!
And as we get further into the year it will get colder

    Rexman,

I think if you read my post again, you'll realise that I was skeptical of the low 4s measured on the G-Tech/V-Box would mean it's a 12 sec car on the strip.

I even sent you a PM to support your opinion, lol.
