    Hi Guys,

Quick question re APR stage 1 tune for the Golf R - once flashed, is it always on or are there different profiles to select from?

Also, does the tune assume you will have to use 98RON fuel? Thanks.

That's a question for the Tuning and Performance (inc ECU upgrades) forum, but to quickly respond. The Golf R does not allow any "switching" like older models do. The S3 and TT-S are now also in the same boat. There isn't enough memory available on the ECU being used in them.

Thus, no matter which tune you go to, it's permanent (hence why they now have "back to stock for dealer servicing" plans).

The tune assumes you have 98 fuel, yes. But then, so does the stock tune. The stock tune will accomodate 95 with reduced performance, but I'm not sure how accomodating the stage 1 tunes are... not that I've ever used 95 in a VW...

Thanks Corey for the prompt response.

+1. The ride height of your car looks perfect.

+100!! Get the %^$# OUT! Im keyed up for some springs for sure. Once the shocks die in like maybe 3 years.. I'll get some man shocks, the real deal. But I would be keen on some springs only for now cause descent shocks cost a bit, and I want to do it properly when its time.. but for $400-500 - why not!

Interesting developments - Is VAG trying to limit 3rd party tuning?

In a purely unscientific test conducted on a private road, a stock manual Golf R will be neck and neck to just inching ahead with a Porsche 911 C4 (964) and ahead of a Porsche 911 C2 (993).

On a greasy road with lots of tight corners both Porsches will find it very difficult to keep up with a Golf R.

Yeah. My Sunday was bloody awesome.

I take it you believe in Santa Claus and the tooth fairy TOO!!

I'm glad you gave yourself an out by saying a "purely unscientific test" otherwise I would have believed you were actually serious.

Bearing in mind they are close to 20 years old cars so they may not have been in peak condition and producing the same amount of power as they left the factory with.

Even so, the 0-100 time of a C2 is roughly the same (circa 6 seconds 0-60mph) and the roads were greasy which was in my favour. I don’t see how it is that big of an issue. Or are you one of those people that goes “ohhh Porsche must be supercar fast, Jeremy said so”?

The C4 I’m not sure about, in a couple of different areas I pulled away, in a few different areas he pulled away. Power out of the corners I had him, he could brake a lot later into the corners and carry more speed through them. Straight line it was pretty close, but we backed off at a certain point and it was there that he was seriously gaining. As I said, completely unscientific and with different drivers driving in different ways. I can’t guarantee that they were shifting slower or anything like that.

Once again, may not have been in optimum condition. Lots of variables, but the main thing is I was having an absolute blast with some good mates with some interesting cars.

Glad you had a blast playing. I'm not a Porsche fan by any stretch of the imagination, but the Golf R doesn't have a chance.

Don't take my word for it (not that anybody bothers to listen anyway) just look up the Porsches for yourself and see their regularly achieved times times for 0-100kph. That's what I did before responding to your comments.
