not sure how long it takes for the engine to fully loosen up, but after 5000km i can see improvements.vw claim early 10s for city cycle but i have seen 9s recently, especially since the apr tune.

Just got my worst economy since getting golf 790ks till light came on
90 TSI 1.4T
In similar driving conditions in peak hour (Pyrmont to Marrickville) I get between 360 - 380 per tank, which is an improvement of between 20 - 40km between now, 38,000kms and when I first got the car, I started to notice the difference after about 10,000kms and no I don't drive for economy. Despite those numbers I am still impressed with the fuel consumption given the cars performance and traffic conditions.
Recently I had the opportunity to use my father's VE 6.0 Calais in the same conditions and while enjoying the great soundtrack of the V8 (especially compared to the Teutonic efficiency of the GTI), it was a competition as to what moved quicker the tacho or the fuel gauge. The computer read out was between 24 - 26l/100km, while I miss the V8 note, I don't miss the $$$$ required in petrol.

If you like to drive hard, get the APR Stage 1. Increases performance out of sight and also saves fuel.
While it is a bit pricey, imagine the $$$ saving in recouped fuel costs. (Yes this is the accountant in me yet again!)

I hear you brother, I own a Ford Territory also and although it's the kiddie hauler/battle wagon and I dont expect it to be a performance vehicle, it uses way more fuel than the Golf for way less oomph. Puts it all into perspective really
Sounds very tempting mate, I wish I had the spare cash right now but I'll have to put it on ice for now. Cheers!
im just in awe of the frugalness of the gti. when i owned an s2000. i was getting around the high 8l to low 9l/100km routinely. when i owned an evo9, i was averaging about 11l/100km, and that was trying to be frugal, if i was being an idiot, it would shoot up around 13l/100km.
just goes to show that technology with turbo cars and economy has come a long way. our 1989 honda civic spare car gets 8l/100km. but uses the 91ron

After 7k on the odometer now, I seem to average about ~650km with the GTI on a full tank of VPower. Pretty happy with that considering I don't baby it around all the time. Don't really get any less than 600km to a tank

far out! how? i average about 420-440km. this thing drinks hard compared to my old Cooper S. The mini was the best in fuel. Flog it as much as you want and it will clocked heaps on a full tank.
i do flog mine a lot though : )
