I've had a few offers like that now Rocket! I'd buy it for $40k too!!
I had a frustrating 4 - 5 month wait for my MK5 in 2005 to get Sat Nav, Leather and Sunroof (though it was worth the wait). I have now ordered a Reflex Silver 118 TSI with DSG, which I will get in less than 2 weeks. Only extra this time will be floor mats (I am saving money). Driveaway is approx. $30,600. Not bad I feel.

Any thoughts
Through a leasing company (Fleet Partners), they are able to get discounts I can't. So, I am leasing it, but the lower the total cost, the lower the payments and residual after 4 years.
According to the spreadsheet, you're aiming to stay in the following ranges for your spec:
Manual: $38,060.50 - $39,372.93
DSG: $40,300.75 - $41,690.43
So you need to bargain down by more than $1000 (preferably $2300) and you've got yourself a good deal
Just a thought: when I took out a novated lease on my last car I did not have to include gst in the leased amount. Therefore there are two prices: the price of the car driveaway, which includes gst, and the price you finance, which doesn't. Make sure that the price you have includes gst, therefore the amount financed will be 9.1% less than the "price" they quote. That is for a novated lease anyway, it may be different if you are going for another type of lease.
It's also a reason to stay away from Luxury Homes (their prices crash first in a downturn), Boats (anything bigger than a Tinnie), Motorhomes, luxury leather goods, etc, etc.
As long as you are aware of potentially poor resale value when you make your buying decision, you might as well spec your car the way you want it, not based on how an Actuary will view it on the 2nd hand market.
