    MK6 77TSI 17" Wheel Problem - Help

    Hi all,

I am new here and live in Brisbane Australia. I have just bought a 2011 CW 77TSI Golf. It's the new baby golf with the 1.2T engine from the Polo.

I just recieved a set of 17" Goal Anthracite rims that i bought online, I took them down the the local tyre shop and when the guy who works there did a test fit he said that the wheels would scrub. I had a look and he appears to be right, the quarter in question is the rear right where the fuel filler pipe goes down to the tank and there appears to be very little clearance on the inside of the wheel. Now, it appears to me as if they WOULD fit (albeit with nearly no clearance) but I really don't know if there is something different with these golfs compared with the 90's, 118's or GTI's that would mean I couldn't fit these wheels.

I did a fair measure of research before I bought these rims and expected them to be an easy fit. I think the stock steelies are 15x6's and the goals are 17x7.5 ET51. Obviously there is no issue fitting them to the front. The only other thing I noted was the possibility I'd require suspension limiters (as stated on the ECS tuning website) even though my dealer told me it should be fine with 17's (I'm more likely to pay attention to ECS btw).

Your comments on this situation will be greatly appreciated.

    Dave

You might need some 5mm or 10mm spacers in order for the wheels to fit?

Wouldn't this make them sit further in? Surely machining and adding spacers are two opposites?

Yeah, it might come down to using spacers. Online, I've seen plenty of these wheels fit to mk6 Golfs, do some models have more clearance than others?

How much clearance do I require to avoid scrubbing, as a general guide?

If the wheels really are the offset they claim to be, and these aren't some chinese replicas or something where they claim ET51 but they're not, then you already have wheels which would clear a "regular Golf". Maybe what you should be doing is taking off the wheel in question, taking a photo of your wheel arch with the fuel tank pipe you mention in the 1st post, and showing that to us so we can have a look to see whether it's the same in our cars. There aren't many Golf 77TSI peoples around here... even less who go and change wheels etc.

The other question is what tyre size where you thinking of putting on?

LIES!!! I Loves my 77TSI. Well it turns out today is new day and with it a new wheel shop, they actually went to the trouble to mount tyres on one and test it out and sitting on the ground there is easily 10mm clearance. There seems to be a lot of people out there running them with 15mm or even 25mm spacers but for the record, they DO fit without spacers but it is tight.

The wheels are genuine from ECS (unless the Chinese are stamping on the inside of the rims). Will post photos when i get home from work.

    Aren't spacers illegal?
