    Mk6 118 tsi

    Hey there,

I don’t know much about cars/vw but I have recently bought a Mk6 tsi (auto), it has 160hp and I’ve done a little to it already; rear muffler delete, and blacked out the wheels and badges, I haven’t had any problems with it so far which is great, I really want to tune it as I’ve heard and read that it can really help the car in many ways, the struggle I’m having is finding a mechanic or garage that is willing to take the car in, I’m finding that every single place I call, tell me that they don’t do tunes on the specific model because “they just blow up” is this really true? Or do I just need a place that actually knows what they’re doing when it comes to my engine/car, if anyone has any suggestions around Melbourne, please let me know!

    Thanks

The 118TSI is a bloody awesome motor... until it's not, especially the CAVD. They all fail and crack pistons, lose compression and need to be rebuilt or replaced and sadly they are getting old and its harder to justify repairing them. If you're lucky and have one that's already rebuilt you might be in luck.

That said, I have one running a stage 1 tune and it's soooo worth it over the stock one (except for the breaking part). Really wakes it up to what it should have been.

Yes I've cracked pistons and had it rebuilt.
I've also recently done a manual gearbox. (And the DSG in these isn't great in these either).

I understand the advice to not spend money on them is reasonable since you don't really want to pout money into something more likely to fail... byt (since I have one) APR do a stage 1 and Volkwerke in Doncaster might do it for you (with all care but lots of warnings).

I got a Stage 1 tune done too, and would recommend getting the spark plugs and coils upgraded, since these were the first to go after that. (realised it after a couple of misfires a month after the tune; you can avoid all those diagnostics costs)
Since then, also had a timing chain issue (two months after the tune) but that I think is inevitable with this engine model.
