    So it looks like the Octavia wagon is pretty much lineball with the Golf wagon, which surprises me to be honest. I would have thought Skoda will be cheaper than their VW cousins. In any case, all this is pure conjecture until VW puts out the pricelist.
    Bigger boot, faster, possibly cheaper to buy, a bit more exy to run but services might be cheaper...its definitely lining up as my #2 choice.

    I need to drive it.

    MLC what part of Sydney are you in?

    Why would the Skoda be more expensive to run? The most expensive part is depreciation & the Skoda will be far worse than the Golf initially buit if you are on a 10 year ownership cycle then depreciation wont be an issue.

    Haven't got my receipts handy but servicing is similar dollars to the Golf. No big issue - every 15,000km/12 months, whatever is first. IIRC 15k was ~$250; 30k was ~$330.

    Just a piece of info that may weigh into your decision making on the Golf Wagon (not sure if this has been stated), despite the MkVI look it is based on the MkV platform.

    I was thinking fuel consumption for a 1.8TSI and a heavier vehicle.

    Ok, fair cop.

    So 90kW TSI DSG Golf = $40,750NZ / 32,600AUD
    Aussie it is $28,490AUD so $4K less. Not Apples to Apples exactly (NZ has climatic aircon) but and interesting match. So I am guessing cheaper in Aus.

    Ok, do we know what difference in performance/handling/features this has?

    OIC. I don't really consider fuel to be a major expense. I do 25,000km a year and am avging 6.7L/100. At $1.25/L for 98ron it's $2100 a year for fuel (seems too cheap - /checks.... 2008 = $2052; 2009 = $1866 but I was OS for 4 weeks).

    I drive under near ideal conditions. Best tank ever was 6.1L/100; worst is 8.0L/100 twice - both the last week of December (08 & 09) when my wife was driving & lots of suburban work.

    A bigger engine doesn't necessarily mean significantly more fuel consumption. Bigger factors are where you drive & how much you flex the right foot.

    BTW: mine also uses a bit more fuel these days as it has been remapped to ~145kw & 350Nm. avg 6.5 before the remap, now 6.9 because I give it a bit.

    The main webpage states that the wagon is 'only a few short weeks away' which i think would mean a march launch so get in touch with your local dealer as they would almost certainly have the pricing.

    I must admit the Skoda (although initially my suggestion) would not make an attractive proposition if it is the same price or close. A skoda is great value when 4k cheaper with more features and by all accounts the media are reporting the VW wagon will start at sub 30k for the 1.4ltr, rumoured to be $27,990 in manual.

    I noticed Skoda have also added leather standard in some Passat models which also makes the Skoda around the same price in the Superb. It seems really illogical as i would think that most people spending this sort of money would rather go with the brand that is a success rather than take a punt on something that might work here in OZ
