At that point, the Octavia RS starts to look like an attractive option. You can option Xenon's, but lose the pano sunroof. But hey, it comes with the heart of a GTI.
Or you could get the Skoda 1.8TSI wagon... that's about 5K+ cheaper than the RS wagon and gets the 1.8L turbo engine shared with Audi.

Sure can. But the MDI cable is only about 30cm long so you need to glance down at the centre console to read the screen. Not really safe. I don't know if a longer cable is available, but that solution would be quite cumbersome.

Yeah thats something thats going to be important to me since I need it up on the dash to use GPS.

Ok this should do the trick http://www.radtech.us/Products/Cable...x#DockExtender . Mmm, might have ti get the 72" as 24" wont be long enough I am guessing. Need to figure out the best non destructive solution to nicely lay it out for a windscreen mount now.

My current plan is to get 118TSI but price could push me towards the 90TSI with mandatory Comfort Pack.

Option 1 Rear Parking Assist $1400 (almost 100% going to get it) . I like the idea of rear as well as front sensors, and the auto parallel parking option is a bonus that I am sure would get use. Do people like the visual and audio sensors, and do people actually use the auto park?

Option 2 MDI $270 + cable ?$90 (100%) I need to iron out how to best use it with my iPhone which I would like the also use as my GPS, so I need a longer cable or some such, but I am getting it regardless.

Option 3 Bluetooth $500 (80%) I have seen the youtubes using it and it looks like it does the job with an iPhone.

Option 4 AntiTheft Alarm $600 (50%) A nice to have that might stop a breakin or a least stop too much theft...

Option 5 Dynaudio RCD310 $1800 (30%) Not sure about this. I like my music but this is pricey. The main reason to get it would be to add in the (Option 6) Rear View Camera option $500 (30%).

Option 7 Sports $2000 (40%). Its pricey and I thing I would prefer it over the Option 5/6 combo since I have the Rear Parking Assist anyway. I like the idea of 17"s, the dark tinting sounds excellent, fogs would be useful on trips and bad weather night driving, seats are said to be very nice, sports suspension could be a bit harder and since the UK market doesn't offer the ACC (which is what I would really like) it might actually deter me from getting it since its a family vehicle.

    Options 8+
    Stainless Steel Loading/Bumper sill protector ? $215
    Stainless Steel door scuffs ?$$$
    Floor matts front ?$$$
    Boot mat rubber ?$181
Rear tinting (if I dont get sports) ?$$$

As a newbie here as my first new car ever, I welcome any feedback on these or things I am overlooking.

    Thanks
    My advice, buy a skoda

According to the Skoda Oz website a new Octy wagon with a 118Kw 1.8 TSI with manual gearbox has a maximum (RRP) price of $37,396 in NSW. The VW Oz website doesn't show RRP prices at all.

I would be extremely surprised if a Golf wagon (with the same equipment levels) wasn't more expensive than the equivalent Skoda. If you are looking at discounted prices make sure you are comparing the best deal you can get on both (not discounted price on Golf vs RRP on Skoda).

The Skoda wagons cost $2,100 more than the hatch, so I would expect the Golf wagon will also be more expensive by a similar amount, and being a new model VW may be less keen to discount than for Golf hatches.

It may also be worth looking at the satisfaction levels of Golf owners vs Octy owners. I am one of many very satisfied Octy owners.

In the final analysis, buy the one you like driving the most, as that is what you will notice most over the long run.

I want a DSG so thats more like $39,862 + OR

A Golf VI 118TSI DSG Hatch is $32990 + say $2K (should be less) for a wagon so $35K. So ~$5K cheaper.

With options the Skoda Octavia requires (Bluetooth, Parking sensors, MDI) at a minimum for me we are well over $40K which is really too rich for me.
But hey, your right, I need to look around at deals which I am sure there wont be on the Golf Wagon until near the end of 2010.

True, but as good as the Octavia is in the reviews its likely to be too rich for me even if the drive is great. A real shame as it has 580 litres versus 505 boot configuration, which is one of my key reasons for going a wagon.

That will certainly stir up the VW vs Skoda intra-VAG brand rivalry, if VW (the "middle of the road" brand) does end up being that much cheaper than the equivalent Skoda (supposedly the "value for money" brand) Is there much difference in the equipment levels ?

When I compared the Mk V Golf GTI and the pre-FL Skoda vRS the Skoda was a bit cheaper but had a lot more equipment as std (IIRC heated leather seats, rear parking sensors, 18" wheels and some other stuff). But the size of the wagon's boot and the more comfortable ride was what really sold me.

Until now Skoda had this segment of the VAG wagon market to themselves (Passats and Audis are in a different price class).

If the $$$ is a major factor in your purchase have you looked at a new, superceded (pre-FL) Octy wagon ? There have been some super deals around on manual vRS hatches recently. I don't know if any DSG wagons are available, but if there are any I'm sure dealers will be happy to sharpen their pencils and do a good deal to get them off their hands.

Actually, have you looked at the size of the boot in an Octy hatch ? If it is only volume you are after they are pretty big.

Yeah, I think midlifecrisis is comparing drive away prices on the Skoda's to RRP prices on the VW's.
