Some people don't get it, but i think the MDI is well worth the money & glad I got one (just not cheap but BMW and Audi accessories are more).

lol... it always amuses me when Apple customers purchase an Apple product which Apple tells them how to use (i.e. iPods MUST be used with iTunes... unless you use some 3rd party 'hack' tool) and then question why a standard USB port won't allow them to play their music via the MDI.

It's the same reason you can't plug in your iPod to a computer via USB and play the music without iTunes.

Some people need to think before they post and place blame with the wrong company! Apple have been doing this for years now peoples! :/

im not sure if anyones mentioned this but the MDI charges both 12volt and 5volt ipods.. the factory fit units are in the centre console and the ipod hides in there. the dealer fit units are behind the headunit and the cable is run into the glovebox. there a much better unit then the older ipod kits that were " dealer fit" only.

Just like you can use the MDI for music but you can't use it for telephone calls because Apple have restricted the use of the audio out on the connector to music only. You have to use bluetooth for telephone calls

So many restrictions on the product and how you use it but people still flock to it like sheep. Apple sure hit the jackpot with the ipod/iphone; more addictive and profitable than methamphetamine, your customers don't suffer from methbugs or end up dead in an alley so keep coming back for more and to top it off they're legal.

Yeah - I've heard Apple customers being referred to as Sheeple many times over the past year. And lol @ the drugs analogy

Apple have very clever marketing but products are still fairly idiot proof and 'just work'.

I'm not an apple fanboi by any means and was dead against it for ages (mostly the fact you have to use itunes & their formats.

It's still better than USB anyway as USB doesn't allow gapless playback or support lossless file types.

Just for those that are interested in getting the MDI kit installed after delivery...

I just got back from the dealer. They had the car for about 2 hours and it cost $550 including the iphone cable.

The installation in the glovebox is very neat although it would've been good if the cables were shorter.

Sound quality is excellent and using the touchscreen/wheel controls is a huge advantage. Highly recommended.

Cheers again to all who responded to my questions.

    Hey, I have a followup.

If I get a Bluetooth kit and link my iPhone, and then connect to the MDI what happens?

Can I use the MDI through the headset (310/510) and be controlled by the wheel controls for music AND for phone.

What happens when I get a call, does the bluetooth work ok?

Not sure how it works with the VW bluetooth kit sorry.

I have a bluetooth earpiece paired to the iphone. Song fades out and pauses when a call comes thru. When call is over, song fades in again.

The big problem with this setup is the phone is in the glove box, so if you wanna make a call, ya gotta reach

    Love my MDI.

Have it in 2 cars, mine and my wifes. Mine was a factory fit and my wifes was a dealer fit. I like the centre console fit, but you lose pretty much all your centre console.

Love everything it does BUT the chopping / dropping out when it moves to the next song is driving me crazy. Does it in both cars!
