    Mechatronic fail whilst driving

Was driving home from work on tuesday and had the transmission mechatronic unit fail at about 40-50 kmh in torrential rain. Noticed the MFD D light was flashing and the engine revved with no drive at all. Managed to stop and move gear selection lever through all points and the MFD light PRNDS were all flashing. Stopped the car completely and removed the key for about 5 minutes. Restarted and it all worked again. Got it to the dealer yesterday and they looked at it today with a full replacement of the mechatronic unit required.

VW have agreed to fix that as well as my supercharger problem with some type of upgraded unit. Just have to wait for parts from Melbourne and will get it all back next week.

    Owch!

    That doesn't sound good.....

But at least they're looking after you.
Hope it wasn't hurt on our drive day.

Did you think to hook your VCDS up to it and check the faults before taking it to VW? Would have been very interesting to see that the faults were. I suspect the "full replacement of the mechatronic unit" is (if I understand correctly) due to it being a sealed unit from a service point of view. A specialist area at VW would work on them and not a dealer.

Unfortunately no I was too busy getting the car to them before they shut in the afternoon. I will however ask nicely to see any diagnostics they have on it and try to get some info when I get to speak with them next week. I don't know how the 5051 translates into VCDS but I can only try. I had the cable with me too but no laptop.

A dealer can work on them just fine. They are a sealed unit. But you dont have to disassemble it just unbolt it off the transmission. Plus a few other things you have to neutralise it via the VAS 5051B/5052 and a couple of special tools

That seems like a good outcome. It's annoying that it occured, but are you happy with the outcome ?

Yes, the dealer responded immediately I called them and the vehicle was in there for a week including the weekend as the parts had to be shipped up from Melbourne. Car drives and behaves like it should. No noise from the supercharger but it didn't do that for about 2000 kms. I'm not waiting for it to happen again or being apprehensive about it. It's there to drive and that is what it will do.

How do you know if your mechatronic unit is stuffed? My wife was driving home tonight in our TDI DSG Jetta, she took off from the lights half way across the intersection the engine just started free reeving, she panicked and after a few seconds it found a gear and off it went again. Meanwhile the truck behind her almost ran into the car. She was quite scared! I'll give the service department a call tomorrow.
