Looking for New Golf Wagon - Diesel or Petrol?

    Hi,

I am looking get a compact family wagon, and I think the Golf wagon ticks most of the boxes for us. I'm trying to decide on a diesel or a petrol... I came away from the dealer a little disappointed and confused.

First up the diesel option. Looks good on paper, plenty of power and great fuel economy. Given that we do a large number of Kms and we do a mix of open road and city driving the need to regen the DPF is not an issue. I discovered after speaking to the service manager that the DPF is considered a consumable and is not covered by warranty. What is worse the DPF is built into the Catalytic converter and a replacement is $3200 + GST and fitting.

Secondly, the petrol. Ok I thought I'd won't bother with the diesel and look at petrol. I was informed that the car needs 98 RON and can only be fuelled occasionally with 95 RON. This is an issue given that we live in the outskirts of Melbourne and getting 98 is an issue.

I walked out of the dealership without placing an order... I really was set on the Golf Wagon but it looks like it may not work out for us... unless the dealer got it wrong on the DPF warranty and replacement costs.

Any assistance from the knowledgeable members of this forum would be most welcome.

Buy a diesel, extended warranty and a VCDS cable. You can keep your eye on the DPF between services then. I looked at an early MK5 TDI the other week before flashing it. It was over 100k and VCDS reckoned the DPF was around a 1/4 full.

Thanks for the tip on the cable. As for the warranty... the standard and extended warranty do not cover the DPF. Given the premium for the diesel in the first place and no warranty on the DPF... starts to make a Golf diesel purchase look unattractive. A shame really, as the car ticks most of the other boxes for us.

If you do lots of highway, the diesel will be terrific. The DPF should last for well over 100,000 km with your driving pattern so I'd just wear the cost when it comes to replacement. It beats squealing supercharger clutches.

We bought a Golf diesel because, like you, I didn't want to be searching/paying for 98 RON fuel all the time. You never notice it's a diesel except at idle (and the huge torque and 5000rpm redline - and the awesome fuel economy).

What was the question about the auto?
