    Leaking Sump Plug

    Took my Mark 6 90TSI Golf to the dealership yesterday. Since my last service in September I have had a minor oil leak. They confirmed that it was from the sump plug, and fitted a new plug with some sealer on the thread. No charge and all is good.

    They did say that it would need a new sump fitted at the next service and quoted a bit over $1,000 to supply and fit. I've had 26 cars in my lifetime and never needed a new sump. Is there an alternative? The car is in fabulous nick for a 2012 model, 130K on the clock, and runs like a dream. It's a 6 speed manual, and it has the CAXA engine and not the twin charged one.     Leaking sump plug and a quote for a new sump can only mean one thing in my opinion - whoever serviced the car last has overtightened the sump plug and stripped the threads.

    Replacing the sump is the expensive but easy solution, although you can have the thread repaired by places like this: The Stud Man | Mobile Thread Repairs

    A new sump from Tooleys would be cheaper. A grand is mad. Although sometimes you need to drop some of the downpipe to get it out.

    Maybe just not only the last time. I always use a torque wrench for the plug & the filter as some people tend to over tighten & get it as tight as they can. My failing can be not tight enough without using a torque wrench. I have owned my Mk5 since new & it probably won't ever need a new sump or a thread repair. I sometimes get mocked for using a torque wrench but it always works for me.
    Understand how it works, troubleshoot logically BEFORE replacing parts.
