Knocking sound when accelerating out of first

    Hey guys,

Like the title says. I did a search, didn't find anything relevant. I don't think it's the same as the GTI rattle on acceleration.

I'm getting this knocking sound coming from somewhere when I'm accelerating from first gear (manual transmission). It also happens a bit when I take a turn slowly.

Any ideas what it might be? Only have 10,000 km on the odometer!!!

    Thanks!

Is the knock only audible, or can you feel any vibration at all? Does it sound like it's engine-related (varies with revs)? Driveline related (trans, diff, CV joint etc)? Light knock or heavy? You sure it only happens in first? Can you hear it in neutral, or when the bonnet's open?

Could be anything. However if you're concerned, and it's difficult to provide more info, take the car to your dealership and have a service tech go around the block with you to check it out.

    Thanks Adam,

Drive to work this morning, paid attention to what you wrote

-No, here is no vibration. It's only a knocking sound
-I think it could be engine related. As I drive to work, I have to go down a very steep downhill. I let the car coast down in neutral, and it made no sound at all.
-Light to medium knock. It's not a thump like sound
-No, can't hear it in neutral. Haven't been able to try it with the bonnet open, as it only really happens as I either

1.) Accelerate from first gear. As I let the clutch go and press the accelerator. Once the clutch is out all the way, the sound goes away
2.) Happens occasionally when first gear is engaged, and I give the accelerator a sudden jolt

This is where I wish I had a mechanic friend!!

So you often hear it whilst the clutch is at least partially engaged? How about in second after a quick shift whilst releasing the clutch and as you apply heavy throttle and load?

Either way, as it sounds like it might be mechanical, I'd be taking it relatively easy and heading for your dealer. It may just be a case of something loose, but there's no substitute for a qualified tech having a careful look.

(You should be able to drive down to the service dept and have someone look at it straight away, even if it can't be fixed on the spot.)

Loose engine mount causing engine to hit chassis?
The stock engine mounts are known to be quite soft and easily worn. Have you been doing a lot of LCs?

You'd think if that were the case you'd hear it under general heavy load, and not only while the clutch is being disengaged? You'd possibly also feel the knock if that were the case.

I wonder if it's an ancilliary with a slack belt or something, and it's auto-engaging or disengaging under certain circumstances. Who knows.

Yeah, pretty much when the clutch is partially engaged. But, I do also hear it when I give it some juice so to say...quickly pressing the throttle when a "heavy foot" so to say. No, don't hear it after shifting into second.

Called my service dept. Waiting for a call back. I'm waiting for a part to come in anyways to fix something else with my sunroof (hopefully next week).
