As I've recently done some engine mods, I spoke to my current insurance company (Allianz) and they won't insure the vehicle anymore . Though they will give me a week to arrange other insurance (so it's still insured for now at least which is good).

Allianz suggested getting in touch with Insurance Council of Australia and they have a listing of insurance companies that do insure modified vehicles - Modified Vehicles | Find an insurer

So I did a bit of a ring around and am now going with Shannons. Unfortunately GIO don't insure in SA and I'm steering clear of AAMI from all the bad reports.

The premium is a bit more than what I was paying before, however happy to go with a good company. Also they are insuring for agreed value rather than market value so I know I won't have a finance gap should there ever be a complete loss.

I just changed over my Fiances insurance from AAMI to Just Cars and saved $500 yes that's $500 for the year. It's for her 2012 Polo 77TSI with modified suspension. Same agreed value and excess as AAMI. Funny thing is Just Cars is underwritten by AAMI. And Just Cars has unlimited legal modifications so there's nothing to hold you back tigger

Thanks for the heads up VWindahouse - went onto Just Cars site and got an online quote. Worked out just a little more than Shannons but certainly worth checking out.

    Anthony,

Thanks for that info, just looked at Justcars website and its the cheaper with my mods but sh*tloads. Seems that Justcars have changed their website and approach to insurance. I find it funny about the AAMi association......irony.

Anyway owe you a caffeine/caromel infused bubbly drink, contained in a red aluminium can.

The RAA in South Australia will cover cars with engine/performance mods, as long as they're reasonably tame. ECU tunes alone, for instance.

Been looking the last few days myself and was curious what other people with mods were using in Adelaide.

Was with RAA for years but swapped to Allianz a while ago, slightly cheaper premium but huge increase in agreed value. However no good if I proceed with any mods in the near future.

Tried quick quotes with Shannon's and Justcar to get a guide.. Shannon's were hopeless, stupid premium for low agreed value; surprisingly Justcar wasn't bad, as people have pointed out on this forum unlimited legal mods and the premium was sensible, but again very low agreed value.

RAA once again seems the best bet, as Adam says mild mods are fine (I believe anything up to $4k doesn't affect the policy too much, after that it becomes a little tricker) and their agreed value is fair if not lower than I'd like (well under my Allianz figure).

Seems like I go back to RAA if I keep it mild, anything more and I guess I'm stuck with a low agreed value with someone else.

My wife's car came back from the repair shop last week. She's insured with AAMI and this is her 3rd repair. The first two were sent back because I wasn't happy with the quality but this latest dodgy repair takes the cake...

They completely bogged over the subtle wheel arch line. So we have it on one side of the car and not the other. I could only laugh. It's possibly the worst repair I've ever seen and the guy from AAMI just shook his head and said they'd have to replace the entire panel.

So the moral of the story is use budget insurers if you're happy with budget repairs because that's what you generally get. I have chosen to use GIO with my car because I get choice of repairer and I have a reputable panel beater who is on their 'list'.

I must admit that I'd be nervous about any structural or mechanical repairs carried out by cheap repairers so I'm trying to convince my wife to change insurers.

Seems like GIO is getting the nod on here, but not an option here in Adelaide.. leaving me with RAA if I keep things fairly sensible, and cheap. No idea how I'd go if I really started spending up big on the car - RAA were on a case by case basis over $4k; leaving Justcar - but as you say, AAMI are not flash to deal with.

Go with RAA mate. I'm happy with them. Allianz were great too, and I love how they allow you to choose your own agreed value (as opposed to simply being forced to agree to any old value the insurer nominates... not very agreeable), but the refusal to cover any mods whatsoever is disappointing.

    Cheers, it's looking that way.

I understand why most insurance companies want to steer clear of modified cars, but to me they really do need to differentiate between what the doof doof crowd do (ok a bit of a stereotype) vs what enthusiasts do. I could be wrong but I'd suggest the driving records and more importantly the claims history of the average (and true) enthusiast is better than the average driver.

Out of curiosity, is there a catch with Suncorp? They seemed to accept an Adelaide quote, were flexible on agreed value and their site says the agreed value is for the car plus any modifications (with the exception of those listed - custom paint, race harness/cage, nitrous or after market turbo/supercharger). There has to be something I am missing..

(Interestingly Suncorp used to underwrite RAA until RAA bought them out - so they might actually be ok given RAAs track record here).
