I was pretty disappointed with Shannons. I have my bike and MK4 insured with them, as well as my previous car - all in all around 10 years of insurance and zero claims. I'm 33, rating 1, no convictions etc.
Their quote, even after explaining the above over the phone to a very apologetic customer service agent was $1796/month.
By comparison, I ended up with GIO who my home and contents insurance is through who still offer choice of repairer and lifetime guarantee on repairs $1363

Is that +45 as in pensioner discount?

Out of interest I tried out Suncorp yesterday - unlike some of the other 'state' based insurers they're happy to cover anywhere in Australia.

Unfortunately their online information is not clear and the call centre aren't keen on providing any information either until you waive the online discount. Their quote was quite competitive and after much prodding they seemed flexible on modifications bar the ones excluded and listed online, but they no longer use a ratings system for drivers and instead use a rewards basis of some kind, but again they weren't keen on sharing the info.

Bottom line is this may be a decent option for some people who are stuck with high quotes regardless of location.. but the secrecy and average attitude of the call centre may put others off.

My final washup (for SA people) - it seems keep the mods on the cheaper end and RAA wins, more expensive mods Shannons comes into the picture. Both offer good coverage, similar benefits and choice of repairer etc.

Haha! No pensioner discount here! Just past the age hurdle in terms of having to pay for inexperience.

Have you tried QBE? - I have used them for about 7 years now and found them to be excellent - I pay by the month with no penalty, can choose my own repairer which I have done, the assessors are excellent and turnaround was fast - chose a slightly higher excess to reduce the premium but after Allianz and the experience I had with them several years ago

Tried a quote out then, it didn't like me so much.. +20% on the equivalent RAA quote with mods. Didn't compare minus though, that could make a big difference.

Currently with AAMI for $877. 24 male 2011 GTI Manual 4053. No accidents or mods or license suspensions.

When I turn 25 I'm going with Suncorp. It will cost more but they will cover any modification except for special paint, roll cages, turbo mods, NOS. so if I go for stage 2, they will insure me for the same price and same excess. If I ever get enough spare cash to go for stage 3 mods I guess I'm going to go with Shannons or JCI :/. No multi policy discounts then.

Regarding discounts for online quotes - you are getting a discount for NOT calling up. If you call up, then too bad on your discount. I bet that the person you are speaking to wont get credited for a sale and you are probably affecting their KPIs. Maybe they were under the pump etc? So many possibilities. I wish they didn't have online discounts as it sort of ruins customer service. I like calling up and having a good old chat :p

I'm fine with the concept of the cheaper online price for NOT calling, but their online information is very basic and when you're talking about your pride and joy (to borrow an advertising line from one) you want to make sure you are actually covered.

Unmodified no probs, but it's nice to get clear confirmation and have this stuff noted on the policy to ensure you are covered.. maybe the call centre staffer was having a bad day but I really couldn't get a firm clue as to whether I would be covered properly or not. Yes at first glance it appears I would be, but they had so little information available even on things like the claims process and choice of repairer it did put me off.

FWIW when I did go with Allianz (unmodified) they were always friendly and gave me the online discounted price on the phone - probably cause I did the data entry, I really just wanted clarification on a few things. Ditto RAA and Shannons, both very friendly on the phone.
