I have a 2nd hand Calais VE V that I would gladly sell for $45k I tell you what - I'd give it to you for $25k!!

Ha, yes I bet you would. I was talking about one <1yr old, maybe with the new direct injection V6. Apparently they aren't wheezey like the old Commodore V6s going right back to the VN.

If the Golf MkVI didn't exist I'd buy a Gibson ES-339 instead.

I'll never have a Holden again - I'm going to pick it up from mechanic now as the "throttle control unit" has died....kind of important piece of kit!! Trying to nurse the damn thing through for another 2-3 weeks...

Know that feeling..I'm trying to nurse my Magna for a few more weeks until my new car arrives ..

But to answer the original question posed at the top of the thread..I'd go either a 2nd hand BMW..or a new Subi Impreza had I not bought the GTI.

Prob a Mazda 3 or something, less power and lower price.

Love the mini, but no room in the boot and same problem I had with my Beetle (and two kids at different schools).... two doors.
Maybe the Mazda3, but SP25.... performance in the regular Mazda was a little lacking...

    Mazda RX-8.

Actually I prefer it over the GTI but no one else in the family can drive manual (the rx-8 HAS to be manual), so the DSG box was a good compromise.

I was about to purchase a Mazda 3 MPS but thought to go test drive a WRX first... as the VW dealer was next to the Subaru dealer I thought why not so went in there too to test drive the GTI... fell in love with it and next day put down my order.
